Slowness can come from limited storage, background or startup apps, outdated software, an app that needs more resources, or a device problem; more than one cause may be involved. Avoid paid “cleaner” tools as a first step.
Why is my new laptop so slow?
The pattern is often more useful than the age of the laptop. Note whether the slowdown happens only while starting, in one app, when many apps or browser tabs are open, or across the whole system. Also note whether it began during initial setup, after an update, or after installing a particular app. These clues help you choose the next check; they do not diagnose the cause on their own.
- Slow startup: Check which apps launch automatically.
- One slow app: Check that app’s compatibility and resource use.
- Slow with many apps or tabs: Close what you are not using and inspect resource use.
- Slow all the time or frequent freezes: Check updates and storage, then seek model-specific support if it persists.
Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that does not meet performance needs among possible causes of slow Windows performance. Its guidance cautions that several factors can contribute. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025.
Run low-risk checks first
- Restart the laptop. Save your work, restart, and retry the same task that seemed slow.
- Install available system updates. Updates can address software issues. On Windows, also check optional driver updates through Windows Update; exact labels can vary by release.
- Close apps you are not using. Then repeat the task and see whether the slowdown changes.
- Check free storage. If the system drive is nearly full, use the operating system’s storage settings or cleanup tools to remove files you no longer need. Do not delete unfamiliar system files.
- Check for malware on Windows. Run a Windows Security quick scan, as Microsoft recommends.
Make one change at a time and retry the same task after each one. That makes it easier to tell whether a particular step helped, rather than changing several settings without knowing what mattered.

Windows: check apps, startup, and storage
Microsoft recommends using Task Manager to inspect running processes, system performance, and apps that launch at startup. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, then review the Processes, Performance, and Startup apps views. High activity can point to an app or resource bottleneck, but do not end processes whose purpose you do not recognize.
If Windows starts slowly
In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off only apps you do not need to launch automatically. Microsoft’s Windows startup guidance explains that too many startup apps can slow startup and may affect battery life and performance. Treat the displayed startup impact as a clue, not a reason to disable security software or essential device utilities indiscriminately. Keep apps you rely on available when you need them.

Microsoft defines startup impact categories in its 2023 guidance as follows:
- High: More than 1 second of CPU time or more than 3 MB of disk use at startup.
- Medium: 300–1,000 milliseconds of CPU time or up to 3 MB of disk use.
- Low: Less than 300 milliseconds of CPU time and less than 300 KB of disk use.
Reducing unnecessary startup apps is most relevant when startup itself is slow; it is not a general fix for every performance problem.

If Windows is low on storage
Open Settings > System > Storage to review space use and available cleanup options; labels can vary by Windows release. Microsoft also points to Storage Sense and cleanup tools. Review what will be removed before confirming. If the drive is genuinely short on space and you need to keep large files, moving some to another drive or an external SSD can free internal storage. That is a storage-management option, not a general laptop speed-up.
Mac: check storage, memory, and app compatibility
Apple recommends checking the startup disk, memory use, and app requirements when a Mac runs slowly. Follow these checks in order, retrying the same task after any change.

- Review disk space: Open System Settings > General > Storage. If space is low, remove files you no longer need or move files to another disk or external storage.
- Inspect memory use: Open Activity Monitor and review memory use while the slowdown is happening. Apple notes that “An app you’re using may require more memory than your Mac has easily available.”
- Check the app’s requirements: Consult the app’s documentation to confirm it supports your macOS version and Mac hardware. Quit apps that are incompatible or that you are not using.
- Check the disk if you suspect a disk problem: Use Disk Utility to verify the disk and try to fix detected issues.
Apple’s Mac Help guide to a slow Mac describes these checks. Disk Utility is relevant when a disk issue is suspected; it is not a routine speed-boost step.

If the laptop remains slow after the basic checks, repeatedly freezes, or built-in diagnostics indicate a problem, contact support for the exact brand and model. If it has been slow since first setup, consult the seller or manufacturer promptly about technical support and any return, exchange, or warranty options that apply to your purchase. Terms depend on the seller and your location, so check the applicable documentation rather than assuming a universal deadline.

For Surface devices, Microsoft’s Surface troubleshooting guidance includes checking updates, startup apps, and free space, as well as built-in memory and drive checks. It treats restore or reset as a later troubleshooting path and notes that service options may be available if the issue remains. Before any reset or repair process that could affect files, back up important data and follow the instructions for your specific device.
