If a new PC game won’t launch, first note exactly what happens and any error message, then restart your PC and use the game launcher’s file-verification tool. Check the game’s official requirements and support notices before changing Windows, drivers, or security settings. The right fix depends on whether you see no response, a crash, a launcher error, or a game process that stays open.
1. Identify what happens when you click Play
Before changing settings, record the game title, launcher, Windows version, and the exact error text or code. Note whether the game does nothing, briefly opens and closes, crashes, or leaves a process running. Also note recent game or driver updates and whether other games launch; these details can help distinguish a title-specific problem from a wider PC issue.
- No response: Check the launcher for an error or a game process that may still be running.
- Crash or error: Save the exact wording and code; the game publisher may have instructions for that specific message.
- Anti-cheat message: Use the game’s official support guidance rather than trying unrelated fixes.
Steam has separate support guidance for a game that is reported as already running and for a missing executable. Start with the article matching the message you see: Steam’s “app already running” guidance or Steam’s missing-executable guidance.
2. Restart Windows and retry from the usual launcher
Restart the PC, open the launcher you normally use, and try the game again. If the launcher says the game is already running, check whether a game process remains open and follow the launcher’s specific instructions. Avoid repeatedly launching the game while a leftover process is still active.

3. Verify the game files in its launcher
A failed download or damaged installation can prevent a game from starting. Use the launcher’s built-in verification option instead of deleting or replacing game files manually.
Steam
Open the game’s Steam library page and use its installed-files settings to run Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes; let it finish and avoid other intensive tasks during the check. Epic Games Launcher
Use the game’s options in the Epic Games Launcher to start a file verification. Epic describes this tool as checking local game files for damage or corruption. Follow the current steps in Epic’s verification instructions.
If you use another launcher, look for its official repair or verification feature, or follow the game publisher’s instructions for that platform.

4. Check requirements and game-specific support notices
Compare your PC with the game’s official minimum system requirements, including the required Windows version and hardware. Then check the publisher’s support page for the exact game and any known launch issue. General platform advice cannot confirm that a particular driver, runtime, BIOS setting, or compatibility option is appropriate for your PC.
Steam’s general guidance for games that do not run after “Preparing to Launch” includes checking Windows updates and required components. Use the game maker’s instructions for title-specific requirements, and see Steam’s launch troubleshooting guidance for its general steps.

5. Check possible security or software conflicts carefully
Security software can sometimes block a game executable. Capcom notes this possibility in its Steam game troubleshooting guidance. Check your security software’s alerts or quarantine and follow the game publisher’s instructions before changing protection settings. Do not turn off antivirus or firewall protection wholesale.
Other background tools or overlays may matter for a particular title, but do not assume they are the cause. Change or close them only if the game’s support guidance identifies a plausible conflict.

6. Contact the right support team if it still will not launch
If restart, file verification, and the game’s documented checks do not help, contact the game publisher’s support team. Include the game and launcher, Windows version, exact error message, relevant recent changes, and the steps you have already tried. Steam recommends contacting game support when a launch failure persists; Epic provides a route to PC technical troubleshooting support.
If the problem appears tied to one PC configuration and remains unresolved, a local PC technician may be able to diagnose it. Steam notes that individual configurations can require help from a local technician.
