If a NetScaler appliance crashes or stops serving traffic, first determine whether the problem is the appliance itself, an HA takeover, or a network or routing failure. Check service impact and HA state, inspect links and routes, and preserve configuration and logs before rebooting or making cleanup changes. A reboot is not a diagnosis, and on a standalone appliance it can discard changes that were not saved.

Start by identifying what has failed

Separate management access from application traffic: losing access to the management interface does not by itself establish that the appliance has stopped forwarding traffic. Determine which services and networks are affected, whether the appliance is standalone or part of an HA pair, and—if paired—which node is primary and which is secondary. In the documented HA arrangement, the primary accepts connections while the secondary monitors it. If the secondary takes over, clients must reestablish their connections, although session-persistence rules may be maintained. See the NetScaler high-availability documentation.

Use the symptoms to choose the next checks

  • Management access is down, but traffic appears normal: establish traffic impact through monitoring or checks from affected networks before restarting the appliance.
  • An HA peer has taken over, but traffic is still down: check both nodes, their HA communication, and the network paths serving the traffic.
  • Traffic is down and no healthy peer is available: inspect local interfaces, links, routes, and recent changes while preserving evidence for escalation.

These are triage paths, not proof of a particular cause. An HA heartbeat failure, for example, can reflect a disrupted network path rather than a failed appliance.

Check HA, interfaces, and routing before forcing a change

NetScaler HA failover can follow several conditions, including a secondary missing the primary heartbeat beyond its configured dead interval; a peer hardware or software failure that freezes, reboots, or stops sending heartbeats; primary SSL-card hardware failure; loss of heartbeat packets; certain monitored interface or link failures; all interfaces failing or being manually disabled; a forced transition; or a bound route monitor going down. The documented triggers are listed in the HA failover FAQ.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Review the actual failure domain before forcing a failover or reboot. Check the current HA state, heartbeat connectivity, interface and link-aggregation status, failover-interface status, route monitors, and recent configuration or network changes. A missed heartbeat alone does not prove that the peer is dead: network configuration or connectivity can interrupt heartbeats.

If HA took over but traffic is not flowing

Check both nodes’ release and build consistency, confirm that the secondary is enabled and not configured to remain secondary, and verify that HA communication is not blocked. Also investigate whether the upstream router handles gratuitous ARP (GARP) as required by the network design. NetScaler troubleshooting guidance identifies virtual MAC configuration as a possible resolution when the router does not process GARP as needed; validate that option against the actual topology before changing it. See the Citrix guidance for HA failover with no traffic.

Preserve evidence before rebooting or cleaning up

Collect the information needed to reconstruct the event before deleting files, changing configuration, or making repeated recovery attempts. For an HA investigation, preserve configuration from both nodes. Keep relevant newnslog, ns.log, and messages files, and record a topology diagram showing appliance interfaces and connected network devices.

For routing-related problems, the official checklist also calls for running configuration, command history, top and ps -ax output, relevant routing core files, dr_error.log, dr_info.log, and timestamps from the systems involved. Consult the routing-issue troubleshooting checklist for its applicable details.

Retrieve crash files when present

When crash artifacts exist, preserve them for analysis. The documented retrieval procedure uses an SFTP client such as WinSCP to connect to the appliance management IP and retrieve files from /var/core/1; core or crash directories may contain the latest file. Follow the crash-file retrieval instructions that match the installed build, and avoid deleting artifacts during initial triage.

Decide whether a restart is appropriate

Do not use a reboot as a substitute for diagnosing a link, route, or HA problem. On a standalone appliance, configuration changes made since the last save ns config are lost on restart or shutdown. In an HA setup, rebooting or shutting down the primary causes the secondary to take over, so verify the peer’s health and the expected traffic impact first. The documented CLI restart command is reboot; the cited documentation describes warm reboot as a separate option limited to standalone appliances. Check the restart and shutdown documentation for the release installed on the appliance before using either option.

If a healthy HA peer is available, a controlled recovery path may avoid restarting the active appliance, but that is not a universal instruction to force a transition. Base the choice on peer health and configuration consistency, the evidence for hardware/software versus network or routing failure, client reconnection impact, and the risk of losing unsaved configuration.
