If a home robot starts moving, stopping, or responding unexpectedly, first keep people and pets clear and stop it using its normal control if you can do so safely. Check the robot’s alert and the instructions for its exact model before cleaning, restarting, or trying to retrieve it. A stop or unusual movement can be a safety response or a documented feature—not necessarily a defect.
What should I do if my robot starts acting strangely?
- Make the area safe. Keep children and pets away. Do not grab a moving robot or reach into brushes, wheels, joints, or other moving parts. Use its normal stop control only if you can reach it safely. If there is an immediate hazard, move people away; isolate power only if doing so does not bring you close to danger. There is no single emergency procedure established for every kind of home robot, so use the manual for your device.
- Record what happened before clearing the alert. Note the model, what it was doing, any error code or app message, and whether the behavior has happened before. Check the app or display first; the alert may point to the relevant model-specific instructions.
- Check for simple causes only when it is safe. For a robot vacuum, look for an obstacle or trapped wheel, a brush obstruction, low battery, an accidental pause, or another condition identified by the alert. Do not put your hands near moving parts while the robot is operating.
- Check the environment and sensors using the manual. Lighting, loose objects, reflective surfaces, or dirty sensors can matter for some models. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions; do not assume that a cloth, liquid, or spray is suitable for every robot.
- Restart only if the model’s instructions recommend it. Follow the stated sequence for your device. A factory reset is not a universal first step and may erase settings or solve the wrong problem.
- Stop troubleshooting and seek help if the behavior is hazardous or continues. Use the manufacturer’s support route or an approved repair provider where the manual directs. Do not keep testing behavior that could injure someone or damage property.
Why did the robot stop or move unexpectedly?
Start with the model’s alert and documentation rather than assuming a fault. The same outward behavior can have different explanations on different devices: a safety stop, a normal movement, an obstruction, a power issue, or an environmental condition. Consider these questions in order:
- Does the exact model describe the movement as normal? Dreame says the nodding motion when stopping on its X60 Pro Ultra Complete is normal obstacle avoidance, though frequent occurrence may warrant a restart or service.
- Was there an alert or safety stop? Dyson describes stops related to monitored systems, drop sensors, overheating protection, and other fault states for its relevant robot models. Read the message and follow the corresponding instructions.
- Could something be blocking it or interrupting power? LG lists obstacles, error conditions, and accidental contact with the start/stop control among possible reasons its robot vacuum loses power suddenly. Dreame’s L10s Ultra guidance also points users to check power or battery, accidental pause, obstacles, and app prompts.
- Could the setting affect operation? Dyson’s guidance for its relevant robot identifies low light, loose floor items, reflective surfaces, and sensor condition as factors to check.
- Does the issue persist after the model’s recommended checks? If so, follow the manufacturer’s escalation path rather than repeatedly running the robot to see whether it happens again. The more serious the consequence of another unexpected movement, the sooner to stop and seek assistance.
These checks help organize the possibilities; they are not a validated diagnostic test, and the examples below apply only to the named product guidance.
Model-specific instructions: what the examples do—and do not—show
| Product guidance | What it says | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Dyson robot troubleshooting | Dyson describes safety stops and other fault states, and separately discusses sensor cleaning, low light, loose items, and reflective surfaces. For the relevant robot, it says to clean sensors with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and not to use cleaning fluids, liquids, or sprays. Fault guidance; setup and sensor guidance. | These instructions are for the relevant Dyson robot, not a general cleaning method for all robots. |
| LG robot vacuum | LG advises checking the error and clearing obstacles when troubleshooting sudden loss of power. Its article was published 2023-11-15. LG troubleshooting guidance. | The listed causes concern LG robot vacuums; check your own model’s alert and manual. |
| Dreame L10s Ultra | Dreame’s pause-during-cleaning guidance recommends checking power or battery, accidental pause, obstacles, and app prompts; it includes restarting and directs users to customer service if the issue continues. The support page is dated 2026-03-19. Dreame L10s Ultra guidance. | Use its restart procedure only for that model as directed; it does not establish a universal restart or reset procedure. |
| Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete | Dreame identifies nodding when stopping as normal obstacle avoidance on this model and suggests restart or service if it happens frequently. The support page is dated 2026-06-05. Dreame X60 Pro Ultra Complete guidance. | A documented motion on this model does not mean similar movement on another robot is normal. |
| ECOVACS WINBOT window-cleaning robot | For the hardware alarms addressed on its support page, ECOVACS says that if the robot is adhered to glass, hold the power cord, do not stand directly beneath it, and slowly pull it to a reachable position. The page was updated 2026-07-20. ECOVACS hardware-alarm guidance. | This is a window-cleaning robot retrieval scenario with a fall hazard. Do not apply it to a vacuum or another device. |
| Rowenta X-PLORER Serie 220+ | The support/manual page describes a power-brush safety feature and recommends approved repair when the listed checks do not resolve a base-finding issue. Rowenta manual and support page. | Follow the manual for this model and issue; its steps are not universal robot-vacuum instructions. |
When should I contact support or stop using the robot?
Contact the manufacturer or an approved repair provider when the model’s recommended checks do not resolve the problem, an alert directs you to service, or the behavior could create a safety or property risk. Include the model, alert or error code, what happened, and whether it repeats. If you suspect a safety defect, check current official notices for the exact model and serial number; no recall status can be inferred for an unspecified robot.
