If a hard drive is making persistent, unusual clicks and is also slow or disconnecting, treat the data as at risk: shut down the system and stop powering the drive. If the files are valuable, contact a professional data-recovery provider before running scans or repair tools. If the drive is stable and accessible without concerning noise, copy your irreplaceable files to separate storage before troubleshooting.

First decide whether to stop or copy files

Choose your next step based on the drive’s behavior and how much the files matter:

What you see Safer next step Reason
Persistent unusual clicking, grinding or scraping; slow reads; repeated disconnections; or other signs of physical distress Shut down and stop powering the drive. If the data is valuable, contact a professional recovery provider before using software tools. Seagate warns that unusual noise can indicate physical failure and advises against powering the drive back up in that situation. Continued use or DIY utilities may worsen the problem. Seagate’s data-loss FAQ
The drive is stable and accessible, with no unusual or worsening noise Copy the most important files to separate storage first. Then investigate connections or run suitable diagnostics. WD advises backing up data when a drive remains accessible, and Seagate describes external USB drives as a convenient backup destination. WD backup guidance

Do not keep restarting a drive with concerning mechanical symptoms to see whether it works. If data recovery matters, do not format the drive or alter its partitions; Seagate warns either action can permanently lose data. Seagate’s data-loss FAQ

Does a clicking hard drive always mean it is failing?

No. A click by itself does not prove failure. WD says some drives click during startup, waking from sleep, switching from idle to active, or parking their heads. It also notes that some helium-based drives can make random clicks. WD’s hard-drive noise guidance

Pay attention to the pattern and the other symptoms. Persistent unusual clicks, grinding or scraping alongside slow reads or disconnections are more concerning than an occasional click during normal operation. Seagate says unusual noise may indicate physical failure and recommends shutting down and not powering the drive back up in that situation. That guidance is a safety precaution, not a remote diagnosis of a particular drive. Seagate’s data-loss FAQ

Why does an external drive keep disconnecting?

A disconnect is not always caused by a failing drive. WD lists loose or faulty cables, sleep or standby behavior, filesystem issues, WD password protection, and computer or BIOS problems among possible causes. WD’s disconnect troubleshooting guidance

If the drive has no signs of physical distress and remains stable, a known-good cable, another port, or another computer can help isolate a connection or computer issue. Do not repeatedly reconnect or test a drive that is clicking unusually, grinding, or already struggling to read files; stop and seek recovery guidance instead.

How to troubleshoot a stable, accessible drive safely

  1. Copy irreplaceable files to separate storage. Prioritize the files you cannot replace. Do not use the suspect drive as the only location for a copy.
  2. Check the simplest connection causes. If the drive is behaving normally apart from disconnects, try a known-good cable and a different port. If possible, check whether it behaves the same way on another computer.
  3. Review relevant sleep or standby behavior. A drive that disconnects after inactivity may be affected by sleep or standby settings; check this only after preserving accessible files.
  4. Use diagnostics only after protecting the data. SMART monitoring and manufacturer diagnostics can provide useful warning signs, but they are not a guarantee that the data is safe.
  5. Replace a drive that is failing or no longer trustworthy. If the files are backed up or not worth recovering, do not rely on the suspect drive as the only copy. Seagate says a failing SeaTools result calls for immediate backup and replacement. Seagate’s SeaTools guidance

Why SMART, scans, and repair tools should not come first

SMART is a monitoring and reporting system, not a promise that a drive is healthy or that its data is safe. WD says SMART errors indicate risk and call for prompt backup; the meaning of individual attributes and thresholds is defined by the manufacturer. WD’s SMART guidance

Do not let a diagnostic result overrule persistent concerning symptoms. Seagate advises immediate backup and replacement after a failing SeaTools result, but a long scan or stress test is not a sensible first move when a drive is already clicking unusually or showing physical distress.

WD cautions that chkdsk can cause data loss and advises having a backup on another drive before using it. Seagate warns against recovery utilities when unusual noise may indicate mechanical failure. Avoid chkdsk, filesystem repair, defragmentation, and recovery scans until important data is backed up; when the drive appears physically distressed, stop before running utilities at all. When to contact a professional recovery provider

If the files are valuable and the drive has persistent unusual clicking, slow access, repeated disconnections, or other obvious signs of physical distress, stop powering it and ask a professional data-recovery provider what to do next. Seagate recommends professional recovery in cases involving unusual noise and physical failure. Seagate’s data-loss FAQ

WD does not itself provide data recovery; it lists third-party partners but says agreements are between the user and provider and disclaims warranty or reliability of those services. Compare providers based on location, evaluation process, total cost, data confidentiality, and terms, and ask each provider directly about those details. WD’s data-recovery guidance
