If a crypto position drops sharply, pause before trading and work through your investment plan, ability to absorb further losses, portfolio concentration, and the risks of the asset and platform. There is no universal rule to sell, hold, or buy more: the right decision depends on your objectives, time horizon, liquidity needs, and risk capacity.
Start by verifying the position, not reacting to the price
- Confirm the asset, quantity, account balance, and the platform’s displayed information. Check for obvious account or data discrepancies before acting.
- Verify what changed using reliable information. Do not trade solely because of a headline, social post, or brief price move.
- Pause long enough to make a decision from your plan rather than from the intensity of the moment. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) advises investors to create and follow an investment plan rather than let short-term emotions disrupt long-term objectives: Investor.gov: Save and Invest.
Revisit why you bought and what would change your decision
Review the reason you own the asset, your intended holding period, and any risk limits you set. Ask whether the facts that supported your original decision still hold. A past purchase price is not evidence that the asset will recover, and a decline alone does not establish that it will keep falling.
Write down what information would change your view and what you will do if it does. This makes the decision more deliberate and less dependent on trying to predict the next move.
Check whether you can absorb further losses
Consider whether losing more could interfere with essential expenses, debt repayment, or near-term goals. The SEC describes risk tolerance in terms of both willingness and ability to lose some or all of the original investment; it also identifies time horizon and risk tolerance as factors in investment allocation: Investor.gov: What Is Risk?

The SEC’s crypto asset securities alert puts the risk plainly: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” That is a general warning, not a personalized assessment of your finances: SEC: Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities.
Assess the position in your whole portfolio
Look at how much of your overall portfolio is exposed to this asset and to crypto more broadly. A position that has become a large share of your holdings may create a different risk than a small position, even if the percentage drop is the same.

Diversification and allocation can help manage overall portfolio risk, but neither guarantees that losses will be avoided or that a particular asset will recover. The SEC’s investor materials discuss diversification as a way to manage risk, not a promise of protection: Investor.gov: Diversify Your Investments.
Reconsider the asset, custody, and platform risks
A crypto position carries more than price risk. SEC guidance warns that crypto asset securities can be exceptionally volatile and speculative, with the possibility of significant losses. Depending on the asset and how it is held, investors may also face illiquidity, fraud, regulatory changes, technical problems, platform failure, or withdrawal restrictions: SEC: Exercise Caution with Crypto Asset Securities.

Do not assume that crypto held through an intermediary receives the same protections as an insured bank deposit or securities held at a registered broker. The SEC’s crypto custody alert explains risks involving third-party custodians, including loss of access if a provider fails: SEC: Crypto Asset Custody Basics for Retail Investors. Legal classification and protections vary by asset, product, platform, and jurisdiction; U.S. investor guidance does not resolve the status of a specific holding elsewhere.
Compare holding, reducing, and exiting against your plan
These choices are decision paths, not recommendations. Compare them using the same questions rather than treating any one as the default:

No regulator cited here can determine which choice is right for an individual position. Make the decision in light of your own plan and ability to bear loss rather than treating a general checklist as a trade call.

Order names do not guarantee the outcome you want. In its bulletin on stock orders, the SEC explains that a stop order becomes a market order when triggered, while a stop-limit order sets a limit on execution price but may not execute. As the SEC states, “The stop price is not the guaranteed execution price for a stop order.” This stock-order guidance does not confirm how a particular crypto platform handles orders, so check that platform’s current rules and terms before placing one: SEC: Stop, Stop-Limit, and Trailing Stop Orders – Investor Bulletin.

Avoid revenge trades and automatic averaging down
Do not add to a position solely to recover a loss, and do not sell solely to escape the discomfort of a decline. Adding more increases exposure; it does not make a recovery more likely. A joint 2026 investor bulletin warns that attempts to time markets can lead investors to buy high and sell as prices fall: Investor.gov: Timing the Market.
Record the decision and the conditions behind it
Before acting, note the facts you checked, how the choice fits your plan, the amount of additional loss you can tolerate, and any execution limits you verified. Set a point or condition for reviewing the decision again, such as a meaningful change in the investment thesis or your financial needs—not a prediction that the price must return to its previous level.
Crypto prices can move sharply in either direction, but no general investor guidance establishes a loss threshold that tells every holder when to sell or buy. Avoid assuming a rebound; use your objectives, risk capacity, and the practical risks of the asset and platform to decide.
