If your Bluetooth mouse lags or stutters in Windows 11, start with the reversible checks: run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in Get Help, check the mouse’s charge and position, and test whether nearby USB 3.0 devices affect it. If that does not help, reset the Bluetooth connection, check power-saving behavior, and update the PC’s Bluetooth driver through Windows or the PC maker. A second-PC test can help determine whether the problem follows the mouse or stays with the computer.

Start with the quick checks

  1. Run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. Open the Get Help app and run its Bluetooth troubleshooter. Microsoft recommends this as the first step for Windows 11 Bluetooth problems. If it does not resolve the mouse lag, continue below. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.
  2. Check power and range. Confirm the mouse is switched on and charged, or install fresh batteries. Keep it near the PC while testing. Move the mouse or a nearby USB device to see whether the symptom changes.
  3. Check for USB interference. Microsoft notes that an unshielded device plugged into a USB 3.0 port can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth. Temporarily move the mouse away from nearby USB devices, or disconnect the suspected device, and check whether movement becomes smoother. This is an isolation test, not a guaranteed fix.
  4. Reset the Bluetooth connection. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices, turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, then turn it on again. If the mouse still stutters, remove it from the device list and pair it again using the mouse’s pairing procedure. Re-pairing resets the connection; it does not by itself show whether the mouse or PC is faulty. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.

Use the timing and pattern to narrow down the cause

Lag begins after inactivity or waking the PC

A brief delay after a period without movement may be the mouse reconnecting from a low-power state rather than suffering continuous interference. Microsoft’s Surface and Microsoft accessory guidance says Bluetooth devices may enter hibernation after 8–10 minutes of inactivity and can take several seconds to reconnect when used again. That timing is guidance for the devices covered by that page, not a universal specification for every Bluetooth mouse. Microsoft Support’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting page.

If the mouse repeatedly disconnects or behaves differently after sleep, check whether Energy Saver is enabled. Microsoft also lists power management for the Bluetooth adapter as a possible factor in recurring disconnects. To check the adapter setting, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, open the adapter’s properties, and look for a Power Management tab. If it is available, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Not every PC or adapter exposes this tab or checkbox. Microsoft also lists restarting Bluetooth Support Service as a step for recurring drops. Microsoft’s guidance for Bluetooth devices that keep disconnecting.

Movement is consistently slow, not just delayed after idle

Close open apps and restart the PC to check whether the slowdown changes under a lighter workload. If Windows reports a battery level for your mouse, check it. You can also review pointer speed under the mouse’s Pointer Options; changing this setting affects how far the cursor travels, but it will not repair Bluetooth dropouts. These checks are included in Microsoft’s Surface and Microsoft accessory guidance, so exact labels and options may vary by mouse. Microsoft Support’s Surface mouse and keyboard troubleshooting page.

Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver safely

An outdated Bluetooth driver can contribute to connection problems. Start with Windows’ built-in driver search rather than a third-party driver download site:

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Bluetooth.
  2. Right-click the Bluetooth adapter and choose the option to update its driver.
  3. Choose the automatic search option. If Windows does not find a current driver, check the official support page for your PC manufacturer and model.
  4. Restart the PC if Windows prompts you to do so, then test the mouse again.

Adapter names and available options vary by PC. The correct driver depends on the computer and Bluetooth adapter, so do not select a driver based on a similar-sounding model. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guide.

Test the mouse on another PC

If the basic checks and driver update do not settle the issue, pair the mouse with another PC and use it long enough to see whether the same stuttering occurs. This comparison helps separate a mouse-side problem from a problem with the original PC’s adapter, driver, or configuration.

  • The mouse works normally on the second PC: Focus on the original computer’s Bluetooth connection, adapter, driver, or power settings.
  • The mouse also stutters on the second PC: Check its charge or batteries and consider contacting the mouse maker. Replacement is a possibility, not a conclusion to draw from one symptom alone.

Microsoft recommends a cross-PC test for input-device problems and says a device that fails on another PC might need replacement. Surface and Microsoft accessory guidance and Microsoft’s mouse and keyboard troubleshooting guidance.

What to try next

Use the result of each test to guide the next one: a change after moving USB devices points toward a local interference issue; a delay limited to idle periods may reflect reconnection after power saving; and a problem that follows the mouse to another PC shifts attention toward the mouse itself. If the mouse works elsewhere, continue with the original PC’s Bluetooth adapter and its manufacturer’s support options.
