A wallet’s activity screen can be out of sync with the network, and the right fix depends on whether the transaction is pending, confirmed successfully, confirmed with a failure, or absent. For a genuinely pending Ethereum transaction, you may be able to wait, speed it up, or attempt a replacement; Bitcoin uses different replacement rules. A confirmed transaction cannot be undone by wallet support.
How to check whether a transaction is really pending
- Identify the network. Use the network selected when you sent the transaction—not simply the token or wallet name.
- Open that network’s block explorer. Search for the transaction hash, or the sending address if you do not have the hash. MetaMask recommends checking the explorer before trying a replacement or clearing wallet activity: MetaMask’s pending-transaction guidance.
- Read the transaction status. Confirm the sender, recipient, amount, and whether it is pending, included successfully, included with a failure, or not found.
If the wallet says “pending” but the explorer shows no matching pending transaction, the display may be stale or local to the wallet. Do not assume that clearing wallet activity cancels an on-network transaction; follow the wallet’s instructions for that specific situation. MetaMask explains the distinction in its stuck-transaction guidance.
What to do if an Ethereum transaction is pending
On Ethereum and some Ethereum-compatible networks, a transaction may wait because its fee bid is too low for current demand. Ethereum.org also identifies insufficient native currency for gas and a gas limit that is too low during high traffic as possible causes. See Ethereum’s gas and fees overview. If the transaction is not urgent, waiting may be the simplest choice. Network demand changes, so an old fee estimate is not a reliable guarantee of when it will be included.
Wait, speed up, or attempt a cancellation

Wallet labels and controls vary by version and network. If you use MetaMask, its speed-up and cancellation instructions describe the wallet’s same-nonce approach. Check current wallet guidance rather than copying a fixed fee value from an old screenshot or forum post.

If you have multiple pending transactions from the same Ethereum account, nonce order matters: later transactions can wait behind an earlier pending nonce. Handle the earliest stuck transaction first, and confirm the replacement’s status on the explorer before treating the original as displaced. Clearing or resetting local wallet activity only changes what the wallet displays; it does not erase a transaction that is still pending on the network.
What to do if a Bitcoin transaction is pending
Do not apply Ethereum’s same-nonce cancellation steps to Bitcoin. Bitcoin confirmations are probabilistic, and a transaction paying a fee below what is currently prioritized may take longer. Bitcoin.org says blocks are added approximately every 10 minutes on average, but that is not a promised wait time: there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum delay. Bitcoin replacement depends on the transaction and wallet or node policy. BIP 125 describes opt-in replace-by-fee signaling and relay conditions. If your wallet supports replace-by-fee or child-pays-for-parent, use its Bitcoin-specific instructions and check the resulting transaction on an appropriate Bitcoin explorer.
What to do if the transaction is confirmed but failed
A confirmed failure is not a pending transaction, so waiting for it to clear or submitting a same-nonce cancellation is not the remedy. On Ethereum, gas pays for computation even when execution fails; Ethereum.org states, “The fee is paid regardless of whether a transaction succeeds or fails.” Review the explorer’s transaction receipt and the wallet or application’s error message before retrying. If the failure came from a contract condition or incorrect input, changing only the fee may not solve it. The explanation of execution and fees is in Ethereum’s gas documentation.

When to contact support—and what never to share
For a self-custody wallet, use the wallet provider’s official support site. For a custodial exchange account, contact the exchange through its official website or app. Ethereum.org warns that “There is no company, support team, or help desk behind Ethereum.” Never disclose your seed phrase or private key to someone claiming they can unstick or recover a transaction; use Ethereum.org’s support and safety guidance and official provider channels.
If a transaction has been confirmed on the blockchain, a support agent cannot roll it back. If you sent funds to the wrong recipient, recovery depends on the recipient or other circumstances—not a network reversal.
