If you are injured while reporting in a conflict zone, first check whether it is safe to approach or remain at the scene, then get qualified medical help and activate your newsroom’s evacuation plan. If you are detained, the legal protections that may apply depend on your status and the circumstances; contact a qualified lawyer and a journalist-support organization as soon as you can.

What should you do if you or someone else is injured?

Check for danger before approaching

Do not become another casualty. Before moving toward an injured person or trying to help, assess whether the area is still dangerous. Hazards can include fire, electricity, chemicals, traffic, or a confined space. If you cannot act safely, alert emergency services and wait for qualified responders.

Get professional medical help

First aid is temporary care while expert help arrives, not a substitute for medical treatment. Keep any care within the limits of your current training. Report the location and known hazards to emergency responders, and tell your newsroom contact that medical assistance is needed.

If you are helping someone and it is safe to do so, communicate calmly, check whether they are conscious and breathing normally, and explain what you are doing. Pass any change in their consciousness or breathing to the emergency team. These are basic observations, not a replacement for current certified first-aid training. Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF) makes the same distinction in its Safety Guide, whose first-aid chapter says its procedures cannot replace proper training.

Activate the medical and evacuation plan

Once immediate help is being arranged, contact the newsroom person responsible for the assignment’s medical and evacuation plan. Follow the agreed communications procedure and identify the intended medical destination and evacuation route. A route, hospital, or evacuation option that was viable during planning may no longer be safe or available, so confirm conditions on the ground rather than relying on an old plan.

What happens if a journalist is detained during a conflict?

Understand the general legal protections

Under international humanitarian law (IHL), journalists are generally civilians and must be respected and protected as long as they do not directly participate in hostilities. This protection is based on their status, not on whether they work for a large outlet, are freelance, are local, or hold press accreditation. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) explains these principles in its journalist FAQ, updated in 2026.

Know the distinction for authorized war correspondents

A journalist formally authorized to accompany armed forces may qualify for prisoner-of-war status if captured. Journalists who are not war correspondents remain civilians and, if detained by a party to the conflict, receive the civilian protections that apply to their situation.

Do not treat general protections as a guarantee

IHL does not give journalists an unrestricted right to enter territory or conflict areas; access may be restricted under applicable law. Legal protections do not prevent detention, and there is no universal script for what to say or sign when confronted by an arresting authority. The applicable law, conflict classification, and individual circumstances matter. For advice about a specific case, seek a qualified lawyer rather than relying on a general explanation of IHL.

Who can help after an injury, arrest, or detention?

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) maintains a resource center with referrals for journalists and their families. Its listings cover legal referrals for journalists detained, arrested, or prosecuted for their work, as well as medical help for assignment injuries, prison support, trauma counseling, emergency relocation, family support, and replacement of damaged or confiscated equipment.

These are referral categories, not promises of payment, eligibility, or a particular response. Check each service’s current terms and eligibility, and use a qualified lawyer for legal advice. CPJ’s resources and individual linked services can change.

What should you prepare before deployment?

Agree on a practical medical and evacuation plan

  • Identify medical services and destinations in advance, and establish how the newsroom will confirm their current capability and availability.
  • Map evacuation routes and decide who can activate the plan. Build in a way to communicate changes if a route or destination becomes unusable.
  • Set a newsroom communication plan, including who should be contacted if you are injured, unreachable, or detained.
  • Complete a pre-assignment risk assessment that addresses battlefield hazards, equipment, training, and emergency procedures.

CPJ’s conflict-safety guide, published in 2003, recommends mapping medical services and evacuation routes and carrying a first-aid kit. Treat that guide as historical planning context: check routes and services against current local conditions, and have medical procedures and equipment reviewed against current training.

Choose training and equipment for the assignment

CPJ’s conflict resources point to first-aid materials and hostile-environment and first-aid training (HEFAT). When assessing a course, consider how much practical first-aid instruction it includes, whether it covers hostile environments, the instructor’s qualifications, and how well it fits the assignment. A kit is only a basic preparedness item: choose its contents with a qualified trainer and an assignment plan, and do not treat equipment as a substitute for training or professional care.

Plan for psychological and digital safety

RSF’s safety guide, produced with UNESCO and identified as a 2017 guide, covers preparation, on-assignment safety, digital safety, physical and psychological wounds, and useful contacts. Include digital-safety measures in assignment planning, alongside physical safety and newsroom communications. RSF also emphasizes preparation and newsroom training, and recommends debriefing or psychological support when signs of post-traumatic stress arise.

What to do after the immediate emergency

When the immediate medical or detention crisis has passed, let the newsroom know what support is needed and consult the relevant CPJ referrals for legal, medical, prison, relocation, family, equipment, or trauma assistance. For emotional effects, consider professional support and a newsroom debrief; do not assume that a person must wait until symptoms become severe to seek help.
