Samsung’s guidance gives timings of 7–10 seconds on its frozen-screen page and more than 7 seconds on its general unresponsive-device page, so the exact button name and timing can vary by Galaxy model. A forced restart is not a factory reset and does not erase your stored files.
1. Force-restart the frozen Samsung phone
If the screen is stuck and tapping does nothing, press and hold Volume down and the Power or Side button at the same time. Keep holding until the phone restarts. Samsung’s frozen-touchscreen instructions specify 7–10 seconds; its general unresponsive-device instructions say more than 7 seconds. Button names and behavior can vary by model.
This is a forced restart, not a factory reset: it restarts the device without the factory reset’s deletion of personal data. See Samsung’s frozen touchscreen instructions and its guidance for an unresponsive Galaxy device.
2. Check for screen interference
If touch response is still unreliable after the restart, rule out pressure or residue on the display before changing settings.

- Remove the case, screen protector, or other accessory that may be pressing against the screen. Samsung specifically advises removing non-Samsung-certified accessories when checking touch response.
- Make sure the screen is clean and dry, then try using the phone again.
If the display responds normally after an accessory is removed, check that accessory’s fit before putting it back on. Samsung’s touchscreen troubleshooting guidance covers accessory interference.
3. Try routine maintenance and updates
Once the phone responds, close apps you are not using and check for available software updates. Samsung also recommends Device care optimization and clearing background apps as troubleshooting measures for a slow or unresponsive device. The menu names and paths can differ by model and software version; look in Settings for software updates and Device care, if available.

These steps can address general slowdown, but they do not establish the cause of a recurring freeze. Samsung’s unresponsive-device guidance describes its maintenance suggestions.
4. Use Safe mode to check whether downloaded apps are involved
Safe mode disables downloaded apps, making it useful for comparing how the phone behaves without them. If the phone works normally in Safe mode, a downloaded app may be contributing, but that result alone does not identify which app is responsible.

- Start the phone in Safe mode. The exact entry method can vary by Galaxy model; follow Samsung’s current model-specific instructions.
- Use the phone for a while and see whether the freezing or slow response continues.
- If it behaves normally, uninstall recently downloaded or updated apps one at a time.
- Restart normally after each removal and check whether the problem returns or stops.
Samsung advises: “If your phone or tablet operates normally in Safe mode, uninstall any apps that were downloaded or updated just before your device began having issues.” If the problem also happens in Safe mode, app troubleshooting is less conclusive; Safe mode alone does not prove a hardware fault. 5. Back up before considering a factory reset
A factory reset is a late troubleshooting step, not the response to a one-time freeze. It erases device data and downloaded apps, so back up important information before proceeding. Samsung names Smart Switch or a cloud account among backup options and also mentions an SD card or USB drive as destinations, depending on the device and backup method.

Samsung support says a factory reset should be used “as a last resort and after trying the previous steps.” Do not confuse that with a forced restart: the restart refreshes the phone’s operation, while a factory reset deletes data. Check Samsung’s backup and reset guidance before choosing a reset method, and confirm your backup is complete.
