If your Uber or Lyft driver or passenger makes you feel unsafe, prioritize getting to safety over using the app or collecting evidence. If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number; in the US, that is 911. Use an in-app emergency feature only if it is safe and available, and report the incident to the platform once you are safe.
What should I do if my Uber or Lyft driver makes me feel unsafe?
Trust your judgment. You do not need to wait for a situation to become clearly dangerous before ending a ride or asking for help. Uber says riders can end a ride at any time if they feel unsafe. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services directly; do not delay a call while searching through app menus.
Before you get in
- When possible, wait in a safe indoor place until the app shows that the driver has arrived.
- Match the license plate, vehicle make and model, and driver photo with the trip details. Do not get into a car or accept a driver whose identity or vehicle does not match.
- Uber suggests asking, “Who are you here to pick up?” so the driver confirms the rider name rather than you offering it first.
- When possible, sit in the back, wear your seat belt, and share your trip status with someone you trust. Uber says its trip-sharing feature can show the driver’s name and photo, license plate, location, and estimated arrival time.
If concern starts during the trip
If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. In the US, Uber and Lyft’s reviewed safety guidance specifies 911. If it is safe to use the app, Uber’s US instructions describe opening the live ride screen, selecting Emergency, then Call Police. Lyft’s US rider instructions describe opening the in-ride Safety tool and tapping Get emergency help to alert ADT. These app routes are additional options, not substitutes for directly calling emergency services when that is the fastest safe choice.
If you can leave the vehicle safely, choose a populated, well-lit place if possible, then move away from the car. Avoid escalating the encounter. Do not put yourself at risk to record, photograph, or gather evidence.

After you reach safety
Report uncomfortable or inappropriate behavior through the platform. Uber says unwanted physical contact and verbal aggression are prohibited and provides an in-app reporting route. Lyft asks riders to report safety incidents and says its Safety Team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If it is safe to do so, include the trip, time, location, and a factual description of what happened.
What should I do if my rideshare passenger makes me feel unsafe?
If a passenger’s behavior creates immediate danger, call local emergency services; Lyft’s US driver guidance says to call 911 in an emergency. Put your personal safety first. You are not required to stay in a threatening situation as a de-escalation tactic.

While the situation is unfolding
- If you are at an uncomfortable or unsafe location, leave if you can do so safely.
- Keep your voice calm and low, and avoid verbal or physical confrontation. De-escalation advice is not a reason to remain where you are in danger.
- If it is safe and available, use the in-app Emergency Help flow. Lyft describes an in-app option that alerts ADT in the US.
Before and after a ride
Lyft recommends confirming a rider’s name before unlocking the vehicle. Once you are safe, report the incident to the platform. Lyft says drivers can contact its Safety Team, which is available 24/7. Provide concrete trip and incident details if you can do so safely.
What do Uber and Lyft emergency tools do?
Feature names, access paths, and availability depend on the platform and location. The instructions below reflect official platform guidance reviewed on October 7, 2026; app screens can change. Look for the current Safety or Emergency area in your app, and use your local emergency number if you need immediate help.

Lyft also says it monitors for unusual activity, such as long stops or route deviations, and may contact a rider with Smart Trip Check-In. That is a platform description, not a guarantee that every unsafe event will be detected or that a particular incident will trigger a check-in.
How to report an incident after a rideshare trip
- Get somewhere safe first. Contact emergency services if needed. Do not wait to file a platform report before seeking urgent help.
- Open the trip or safety section in the app. Choose the relevant safety or incident-reporting option; exact labels may vary by app version and location.
- Describe what happened factually. Include the trip, time, location, and behavior involved when available. Keep relevant trip details, but do not risk your safety to obtain evidence.
Uber accepts reports of uncomfortable behavior through its app. Lyft directs riders and drivers to report safety incidents and says its Safety Team is available around the clock.

Which rideshare app is safer?
The official instructions reviewed here do not establish that Uber or Lyft has better safety outcomes.
