If your Pixel hasn’t received an Android update, first check its update status and exact model: the cause may be a gradual rollout, an incomplete download, an update waiting for a restart, or a model that is no longer eligible. Open Settings > System > Software updates (the menu may have a slightly different name), then use the steps below to identify the right next move.
Check what your Pixel says about the update
- Open Settings > System > Software updates. Depending on your Android version, the menu may instead be called System update or Software update. Read the status message and follow any instructions shown there. Google’s update guidance explains how to check for and install Android updates.
- In Settings > About phone, note the full Pixel model name, Android version, security update level, and build number. These details help distinguish an update that has not been offered from one that downloaded or installed but is not yet active. Google also documents version checks in its Pixel help article.
Check whether your Pixel is still eligible
Google’s current support policy divides Pixel phones by model generation. Pixel 8 and later are eligible for seven years of OS and security updates; Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 families, along with Pixel Fold, are eligible for five years. These periods run from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US—not from a single date that applies to every model. Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Check Google’s Pixel update-support page for the policy and your particular model. Google also cautions that older devices may not be able to run newer Android versions.
If your Pixel is eligible but no update appears
Updates do not necessarily reach every supported Pixel on announcement day. Google says delivery is gradual, depends on the device and carrier, and can take a few weeks. Keep checking the update screen later; Google’s guidance does not provide a specific release date for each carrier, so an individual delay cannot be diagnosed from the rollout policy alone.
If the update download failed or storage is low
Download did not finish
Google says a Pixel that could not complete an update download will try again automatically over the next few days and notify you when the update is available again. Check the update screen and notification rather than repeatedly starting unrelated troubleshooting.

You see an insufficient-storage warning
Use Google’s instructions for checking and freeing storage. Freeing space may address the download problem, but it does not make a model that has reached the end of its update-support period eligible for new Android versions.
If the update downloaded, restart and verify
Pixel phones install downloaded Android updates in the background. The new version becomes active the next time the phone restarts, so restart if the update screen indicates installation is complete. Then return to Settings > About phone and check the Android version and security update level to confirm what is installed.

When to use Google’s repair tool
If the problem continues and matches Google’s repair guidance, the official Update and Software Repair tool is another troubleshooting option. It requires a computer and a USB cable compatible with both the computer and Pixel. Follow Google’s instructions for your situation; the tool is not established as a way to bypass a model’s support end date or a guaranteed fix. Back up important data before any operation that could erase it. A factory reset is not a routine first step for a missing update.

Identify the likely cause before changing anything
