If it is, troubleshoot the download or installation; if it is not, check whether it still receives security updates and decide how to protect your data and accounts. A failed install and a phone that has reached its software-support limit are different problems.
1. Identify your phone model and software status
On Android
Open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) and select Android version. Record the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Menu names can vary by manufacturer. These are separate status fields: an older Android version does not, by itself, establish that security support has ended.
On iPhone
Open Settings > General > About to find the model and installed software version. The exact model matters when checking whether a particular iOS release is supported.
2. Check for an update using the phone’s settings
Android
Go to Settings > System > Software updates; some Pixel devices label this Software updates. Follow the on-screen instructions and install only an update offered for your device. Google recommends using Wi-Fi and having at least 75% battery before updating. Back up important data first, and keep the phone powered and connected to a reliable network during installation. iPhone
Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Install an update offered for your device, preferably after backing up important data and connecting to power and a reliable network. Apple’s iPhone and iPad update troubleshooting guidance explains compatibility and common installation blockers.
3. If the update is offered but will not install
Work through the likely causes before trying again:

- Check the connection: Confirm that the phone has reliable internet access. A slow download or a connection problem with the update server can interrupt installation.
- Free storage: Check available space and remove or move files if necessary. Insufficient storage can prevent an update from downloading or installing.
- Keep the phone powered: Connect it to power and avoid interrupting the process.
- Retry and read the exact error: Follow the device’s instructions rather than repeatedly starting an update that reports a specific problem. Apple lists incompatibility, low storage, slow downloads, update-server connection problems, and incomplete downloads among possible causes.
Google says that if an Android update starts but does not finish, the phone will try again automatically over the next few days. Its guidance also covers checking update status and storage. If the same error persists, use the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model.
4. If no newer version is offered, verify support for the exact model
Android: check the manufacturer and market
Android release availability varies by device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier; older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. Check the manufacturer’s official support information for your exact model and market. If the schedule is unclear, ask the manufacturer or carrier. A delayed rollout or a full storage drive alone does not prove that the device is unsupported.

iPhone: check compatibility with the target iOS release
Compare your model with Apple’s compatibility information for the specific iOS version you want to install. If the model is not supported, repeating download troubleshooting will not make that release available.
5. Check security updates separately from major-version eligibility
A phone may be unable to install the newest major operating-system version and still receive security updates on an older software branch. Check the device’s security-update date and the manufacturer’s or Apple’s official release information for that model. Do not treat an old version number alone as proof that security support has ended.

Apple Support says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” If you cannot update an Apple device, Apple says eligible users can consider enabling Lockdown Mode. It is a possible mitigation for some users, not a substitute for supported software or a universal solution.

If security updates still arrive
If the phone still receives security updates and runs the apps you need, you may be able to keep using it while planning your next step. Confirm its patch status periodically and consider whether its battery, storage, accessibility features, and app support still meet your needs.

If security updates have ended
Where practical, avoid using an unsupported phone for sensitive accounts. Prioritize moving essential accounts and data to a currently supported device. Replacement is the clearest long-term option if the phone has reached its support limit or can no longer run apps you rely on.
Before buying a replacement, check the exact model’s published security-update commitment for your region, along with carrier and network compatibility, required apps and accessibility features, storage, battery and repair condition, price, and data-migration options. No accessory or repair part can make an unsupported model eligible for a newer official operating-system release.
7. Treat unofficial Android software as an advanced-risk option
A modified Android version or custom ROM is not a routine fix for a phone that no longer receives official updates. Google warns that rooted or modified Android versions may lose automatic Google security updates and other built-in protections. Compatibility, ongoing maintenance, banking-app behavior, bootloader requirements, and the risk of data loss depend on the exact device and software. Google advises restoring the original operating system; if you keep a modified system, it suggests using a different device for important accounts and sensitive data.
