First check the on-screen message: a blackout is a rights restriction, not necessarily a technical failure. If there is no blackout notice and playback will not start, contact the streaming provider that carries the game. The right service—and the remedy—depends on your country, market, and the game’s broadcast rights.
Check whether it is a blackout or a playback problem
A blackout notice usually means the game is unavailable live in your location under local or national broadcast rules. NHL subscription terms say games on ESPN+, Sportsnet+, or DAZN may be unavailable live in a team’s local territory or when the game is televised nationally in the viewer’s country or programming area. That does not by itself mean the app or stream is broken. See the NHL Terms of Service.
If there is no blackout message and the stream fails to load or play, the available official guidance does not establish one troubleshooting sequence that applies to every NHL streaming partner. Use the affected provider’s support instructions for the specific service and device rather than assuming that restarting an app, changing devices, or altering network equipment will fix it.
Confirm which service has the rights to this game
Check the NHL’s How to Watch & Stream NHL Games guide for the current outlet in your country and market. The 2026–27 guide lists U.S. national games across ESPN+, Hulu, TNT/Max, ESPN, and ABC, and directs viewers to team broadcast information for regional games. For Canada, it lists Sportsnet services, Prime Video, and TVA Sports for national games, with separate local and out-of-market distinctions for regional games. NHL.TV is listed on DAZN in the international territories shown on the guide.

Rights and availability vary by game, market, and season; the NHL says the guide’s territory list is subject to change. A subscription that carries one game may not carry every game where you live. Check the listing for the specific game and confirm that the service supports your device before treating missing access as a technical fault.
If the message says the game is blacked out
Check the applicable local or national listing
Use the NHL viewing guide or the relevant team’s broadcast information to identify the authorized outlet. Blackouts protect telecasts sold to local or regional rights holders, and national broadcasts may also be unavailable on a subscription service in the applicable programming area. Do not try to bypass a blackout; check the authorized broadcast option or watch the replay when it becomes available.

If ESPN appears to have your location wrong
ESPN says blackout location is determined by IP address. If you are watching on a mobile device and believe ESPN has located you incorrectly, ESPN suggests trying Wi-Fi. If the game still appears incorrectly blacked out, contact ESPN through its support chatbot. These steps address ESPN’s location determination; they do not remove a valid rights restriction. Watch the replay if live viewing is restricted
NHL subscription terms say a full-length replay of a blacked-out game is typically available no later than 24 hours after the game ends. The timing is described as typical, not as an immediate live alternative. Check the service’s on-demand listing and current terms for the game.

If you use NHL.TV through DAZN
The NHL says NHL.TV is available exclusively on DAZN in the territories listed on its NHL.TV Information page. That page lists live and on-demand games, including full-game replays, recaps, and condensed games. It also names smart TVs, mobile devices, tablets, and gaming consoles as supported device categories; consult DAZN for specific device compatibility and account help.
The NHL.TV information page identifies live blackouts in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom when a game appears on an NHL partner network in the viewer’s area; it says those games will be available later as full-game replays. Check the current local listing and service terms, since territories and rights can change. For NHL.TV account or subscription problems, NHL.com directs subscribers to DAZN support.

Choose the right support route
- Blackout or uncertain rights: Check the NHL viewing guide and the game’s local or national listing.
- Possible ESPN location error: Try Wi-Fi on mobile if appropriate, then use ESPN’s support chatbot if the blackout still seems incorrect.
- NHL.TV account or subscription issue: Contact DAZN support.
- Other playback failure: Follow the affected provider’s current support instructions for that app and device; no single cross-platform fix is established by the available official guidance.
