If your new laptop feels slow, unusually hot, or keeps running its fan, start with ventilation, setup activity, a restart, and the apps using system resources. Warmth or fan noise alone does not prove a fault. If the problem persists after these checks—or the laptop repeatedly shuts down or fails diagnostics—contact the seller or manufacturer rather than opening the device.
Start with safe checks that apply to any laptop
- Clear the vents. Place the laptop on a stable, hard surface and make sure its air intakes and exhaust vents are unobstructed. Avoid bedding, pillows, and other soft surfaces that can block airflow.
- Give a newly set-up laptop time to finish demanding work. Operating-system updates, indexing, and other background setup tasks can temporarily increase activity and fan noise. If the laptop is busy installing or configuring software, let that work complete before judging its everyday performance.
- Restart it. A restart can clear a temporary slowdown. After it starts again, check whether the heat, fan activity, or sluggishness returns during ordinary use.
- Find what is using system resources. Check CPU and other resource activity before changing settings. A demanding app or background process may explain both slow response and increased heat.
- Install appropriate updates. Check for operating-system and laptop-maker updates, then use the maker’s diagnostic tools if symptoms continue.
These checks can help identify common causes, but they do not diagnose a hardware fault. The exact steps and available service options depend on the laptop model, operating system, and region.
On a Windows laptop
Check resource use and startup apps
Open Task Manager and review which apps and processes are using CPU or other resources. If the laptop is slow shortly after startup, review startup apps and disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Microsoft lists background or startup apps, limited storage, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets performance needs among possible contributors to slow Windows performance. Check storage and updates
Check available storage and install appropriate Windows updates. For a Surface, also check update status in the Surface app and follow Microsoft’s Surface-specific slow-performance guidance. Do not treat disabling security software as a routine speed fix.

If the laptop is a Dell
Dell recommends checking CPU use in Task Manager, reviewing unneeded startup programs, and confirming that vents and air intakes are clear. A demanding workload can make the fans run faster. If Dell diagnostics report a problem, the laptop continues to overheat, or it shuts down, contact Dell Support rather than attempting an unverified repair.
On a Mac laptop
Put warmth and fan noise in context
Apple says a Mac laptop can get warm during normal use. Tasks such as video compression, graphics-heavy games, and Spotlight indexing after a migration can raise fan speed. A warm case or audible fan during demanding work is not, by itself, proof that the Mac is overheating. Higher room temperature and blocked vents can also affect fan behavior. Check Activity Monitor and ventilation
If the Mac is warm without intensive work, or its fans run for a long time, open Activity Monitor and check whether a process is using substantial CPU. Close an app only if you recognize it and understand that doing so may interrupt its work. Install software updates and keep the Mac on a stable surface with good ventilation. Apple’s operating-temperature guidance also suggests closing and reopening the lid or restarting if the issue persists.
Do not rely on third-party temperature-reading apps to diagnose a hardware problem. Apple cautions that these apps do not measure the external case temperature and should not be used to diagnose possible hardware issues. Its guidance mentions resetting the SMC only for applicable Intel-based Mac models; do not apply that step to Apple silicon Macs.

When to contact the seller or manufacturer
Use the seller’s or laptop maker’s support and diagnostic process if poor performance or heat persists after the basic checks, especially because the device is new. Contact support promptly if the laptop repeatedly shuts down or a diagnostic tool reports a hardware issue. Warranty coverage and service choices vary by product, purchaser, and region, so confirm the terms that apply to your purchase.
Avoid opening the laptop or replacing a fan or thermal paste without a confirmed diagnosis and model-specific service instructions. If the laptop is stable but you want to improve your workspace, an optional stand may be suitable only if it is stable and leaves that model’s vents clear. It is not a proven fix for slow performance or overheating.
