If your Kindle can’t open the Kindle Store, first find out whether it can connect to Wi-Fi. If it cannot, troubleshoot the wireless network; if it can, check the Kindle’s time, software, and Amazon registration. Try low-impact checks before deregistering or resetting the device, which can interrupt account access or remove downloaded and unsynced content.
First, determine whether Wi-Fi is the problem
“The Kindle Store won’t connect” can describe two different issues: the Kindle cannot join a wireless network, or it is online but cannot reach the Store. Check the Wi-Fi indicator and try opening a simple website in the Kindle’s browser. If the Kindle is offline, start with network checks. If it is online but the Store still fails, move to the software, time, and account checks below.
If your Kindle cannot join Wi-Fi
Check the network and Kindle’s wireless compatibility
- Turn off Airplane Mode, verify the network name and password, and check that another device can connect to the same network.
- Move closer to the router and reduce nearby interference. If the network is congested, temporarily disconnect other devices and retry.
- Check whether the router’s band or security settings are compatible with the Kindle. Amazon says Kindle devices do not support 6 GHz Wi-Fi; Kindles released before 2021 do not support 5 GHz or WPA3 encryption. For roaming between bands, mesh nodes, or extenders, Amazon advises using the same network name, security type, and password. See Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Handle hidden networks and public hotspots
A hidden network will not appear in the Kindle’s Wi-Fi scan. Choose “Other” in the network list and enter the network name and password. Public hotspots may require a separate sign-in, PIN, voucher, or one-time password. If the hotspot’s welcome page does not appear, try opening a simple website in the Kindle browser to prompt the sign-in page. Amazon explains these cases in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps and public Wi-Fi guidance.
Restart, then test a different network
- Restart the Kindle. Depending on the model, hold the power button until the power dialog appears, or keep holding until the screen goes blank and continue holding for 40 seconds. Follow Amazon’s model-appropriate restart instructions.
- Restart the modem and router, wait two minutes, then try connecting again.
- Connect the Kindle to a smartphone personal hotspot as a comparison. Amazon’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide says, “If this works, the issue is with your network, not your tablet.” In this Kindle e-reader context, a successful hotspot test points to the home network rather than the Kindle.
- If multiple devices cannot connect to the home network, contact your internet service provider. If the Kindle works on the hotspot but not at home, investigate the router or network settings before considering new equipment.
If Wi-Fi works but the Kindle Store does not
Check the Kindle’s time, software, and login
Amazon identifies incorrect device time, outdated software, and incorrect passwords as possible causes of registration problems. Confirm that the displayed time is correct, the Kindle is connected to Wi-Fi, and you are using the current Amazon login. Restart the Kindle and retry. If you have more than one Amazon account, validate the intended login in a web browser on another device.

Match any software update to the exact Kindle
Kindle software versions vary by model and generation, so do not install a version intended for another device. Identify your exact Kindle and compare its installed version with Amazon’s Kindle software update list. Amazon says updates download and install wirelessly when the Kindle is connected; the same page provides instructions for downloading an update to a computer and installing it manually.
Contact Amazon if the device is online but the Store still fails
If Wi-Fi works and the time, software, and login checks do not resolve the problem, contact Amazon Kindle support for model-specific account or service help. The issue may require account diagnosis. A Store outage has not been established here, so do not assume that the service is down.

Why deregistration and factory reset should come last
Deregistering disconnects the Kindle from Amazon services, purchased content, and the account until you register it again. A factory reset returns the Kindle to factory settings, removes personal data and downloaded content, deletes content that has not synced, and deregisters the device. Before either step, confirm that important content is synced and that you understand the account and data effects. Amazon describes these actions in its Kindle restart and reset guidance and deregistration instructions.
