Seeing your public IP address online does not, by itself, mean someone has hacked you. First check whether it was simply visible to a website or another person, or whether there are signs of actual misuse. Then secure your router and devices, and act quickly if an account or financial information is affected.
What should I do if my IP address is exposed?
Work through these steps in order. An IP lookup result alone does not prove that someone knows your identity, has accessed your device, or has stolen information.
- Identify what happened. Did a website, game, chat partner, or lookup service display your public-facing IP address? Or did you also receive threats, experience repeated connection disruptions, see an account-security alert, find unfamiliar router settings, or notice other activity you cannot explain?
- Secure your router. Check the manufacturer’s support information for your model and install available firmware updates. Change the router administrator password, disable remote administration if it is enabled and you do not need it, and review settings for changes you did not make. Reboot the router after changes if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Check your devices and accounts. If you suspect malware, stop entering passwords or financial information on the affected device. Update its security software and run a scan. If you find signs of account takeover, contact the provider through a known official channel, reset exposed credentials, enable multifactor authentication (MFA), and monitor financial activity.
- Document and report suspected compromise. Keep relevant alerts, messages, dates, times, and details of affected devices or accounts. If you suspect your device or personal information is being misused, report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).
Can someone hack me with my IP address?
An exposed public IP address is not proof of a hack. It identifies a connection to the internet; seeing it does not establish that someone has accessed your accounts, device, or router. Look for evidence such as router settings you did not change, unfamiliar apps, security alerts, or activity you cannot explain before treating the situation as a compromise.
The risk is different if a device has actually been compromised. In a March 12, 2026 public service announcement about residential proxy networks, the FBI explained: “Once an internet-connected device is compromised, the device’s IP address can be used by threat actors to mask their online illegal activity, making the consumer appear responsible.” The warning concerns compromised devices, not every person whose IP address is visible online.

The 911 S5 residential proxy operation illustrates that distinction. In 2024, the FBI, Defense Criminal Investigative Service, and U.S. Department of Commerce reported more than 19 million compromised IP addresses across more than 190 countries in connection with that operation. Those figures describe that specific case; they are not an estimate of how often ordinary IP exposure causes harm.
How do I secure my router?
Update and review its settings
Use the router manufacturer’s support page or instructions for the exact model to check for firmware updates. Change the administrator password to one that is not reused elsewhere. If remote administration is enabled and you do not rely on it, turn it off. Review the other settings for unfamiliar changes and reboot the router after making changes when appropriate.

Overheating, connectivity problems, and settings changes you did not make can be possible signs of router infection, according to the FBI. They are reasons to investigate, not proof on their own that the router is compromised.
Replace it only if it is unsupported or compromised
If your router is end-of-life and no longer receives security patches, replace it with a currently supported model if possible. An exposed IP address alone is not a reason to buy a new router. If you do need a replacement, check the manufacturer’s security-update support, available security settings, whether remote administration can be disabled, and whether it works with your internet service and household coverage needs. The cited guidance does not rank consumer router models.

What if a device may have malware?
- Stop using it for sensitive tasks. Do not enter passwords or financial details on the suspected device while you investigate.
- Update security software and scan. A scan may help identify malware, but a clean result does not necessarily mean the device is clean: the FTC notes that security tools may not detect malware immediately.
- Change credentials from a trusted device. Once the suspected device is considered clean—or using another trusted device—reset passwords that may have been exposed and enable MFA.
- Get help if the compromise appears serious. Contact the device manufacturer or a technical-support provider you already trust.
What if an account or money has been affected?
Contact the account provider promptly using its official contact method, such as the support channel listed on its own website or app. Reset credentials that may have been exposed, use unique passwords, and enable MFA. Watch financial accounts for suspicious activity; if money or a financial account is actively being misused, contact the financial institution promptly.
Do not give your password or a one-time passcode to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. If you suspect your device or personal information was compromised, preserve the details you have and submit a report to IC3.

Should I change my IP address or use a VPN?
Do not assume that changing your IP address will resolve every concern. The appropriate response depends on whether the issue is ordinary visibility, suspected malware, router compromise, account takeover, harassment, or exposure of personal information. The guidance available here does not establish changing an IP address or using a VPN as a universal fix.
Can someone find my location from my IP?
An IP address can be associated with an internet connection, but the sources cited here do not establish a general level of location accuracy. Do not treat an IP lookup as proof of a person’s identity or exact location. If the situation involves threats or personal information being exposed, preserve the relevant messages and report suspected misuse rather than assuming that the IP address alone confirms who is responsible.
