Stop gaming and switch off the PC. A tripped breaker is a safety response, not a diagnosis: an overloaded circuit, damaged equipment, a short, faulty wiring, or an arc-fault condition could be involved. If you find damage, heat, scorch marks, or hear buzzing or crackling, leave the equipment alone and get help. If the breaker trips again or you cannot identify an obvious overload, leave the circuit off and contact a qualified electrician.

What to do first

  1. Stop using the PC and inspect from a safe distance. Switch it off if it is safe to do so. Do not touch a plug, outlet, or device that is hot, wet, damaged, sparking, smoking, or making arcing noises. Keep away from smoke, active sparking, or fire and follow local emergency procedures.
  2. Check for visible warning signs. Look for damaged cords or plugs, scorch marks, unusual heat, or buzzing and crackling. If you notice any of these, stop using the affected equipment and seek qualified help. The UK Health and Safety Executive says electrical repairs should be carried out by a competent person (HSE electrical safety guidance); Electrical Safety First also warns against ignoring overheating, arcing, and repeated trips (Electrical Safety First guidance).
  3. Consider everything on the circuit. If it is safe, switch off and unplug devices on the affected circuit. The circuit may supply more than the outlet your PC uses, and another high-draw appliance could contribute to an overload. The PC being the last device switched on does not prove it caused the trip.
  4. Reset only if you have removed an obvious overload and can do so safely. Follow the instructions for your breaker and local utility guidance. Southern California Edison (SCE) advises switching off and unplugging appliances, moving the tripped breaker fully to off, then back on. If you are unsure how to operate the panel, do not experiment.
  5. Stop if it trips again or the cause is unclear. Leave the circuit off and contact a qualified electrician. SCE advises identifying and correcting the problem before resetting again; PG&E likewise recommends calling an electrician if a breaker trips again after equipment is unplugged (PG&E circuit-breaker safety guidance).

What the timing can—and cannot—tell you

The circumstances are useful information for an electrician or repair technician, but they do not identify the fault on their own. SCE lists several possible reasons a breaker may trip again: “too many lamps and appliances plugged in; a damaged cord or plug; a short-circuit in a receptacle, switch, or fixture; or faulty wiring” (SCE, How to Reset Circuit Breakers).

  • It trips after you start a demanding game: Note when it happened and what else was running. The timing alone does not prove the PC’s power supply is defective or that the home’s electrical capacity is insufficient.
  • It trips after a long session: An overload is one possibility, particularly if other devices share the circuit, but the delay does not confirm that cause.
  • It trips immediately or with the PC unplugged: A damaged appliance, short, outlet, or wiring fault is possible. Do not keep resetting it; ask an electrician to investigate.
  • The breaker has a test button or an AFCI/GFCI label: Some protective devices respond to faults beyond ordinary overload. An arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI), for example, is designed to protect against arc faults from damaged, overheated, or stressed wiring or devices (Electrical Safety Foundation International AFCI guidance). Device types and trip indications vary by installation; do not bypass the protection.

Who should inspect it?

Contact an electrician for the home circuit

Call a qualified electrician if the breaker trips again, trips while the PC is unplugged, or the cause is not plainly an excessive load. An electrician can assess the breaker, outlet, and wiring. Do not open the breaker panel for testing or attempt wiring repairs yourself.

Contact the PC builder or a competent repair provider for the computer

If an electrician has determined that the circuit is safe and the trip follows the computer to a known-good, appropriately protected circuit, have the PC checked by its builder or a competent repair provider. That is a sensible handoff for diagnosis—not proof that the power supply is at fault. Do not open the PSU; there is no safe consumer troubleshooting procedure established here for inspecting its interior.

What not to do

  • Do not repeatedly reset the breaker to keep gaming.
  • Do not replace it with a higher-rated breaker, bypass AFCI/GFCI protection, or remove the PC’s earth/ground pin.
  • Do not open the breaker panel or the PSU, or attempt electrical repairs unless you are competent and qualified to do them.
  • Do not daisy-chain extension leads or use an adaptor as a workaround for a suspected electrical fault.

Why the PSU’s wattage label is not a diagnosis

The wattage printed on a PC power supply does not establish the condition or capacity of the household circuit, and a breaker trip does not show that the PSU is defective. The trip can have several electrical causes, and identifying which one applies may require professional inspection. Avoid buying a replacement PSU, UPS, surge protector, meter, or breaker as a fix based on the symptom alone.
