Don’t force the hinge, press on the flexible screen, or try to remove the factory-installed protector. These steps reduce the risk of making damage worse; they do not diagnose the fault.
What to do first
- Stop stressing the phone. If the hinge catches or feels unusually stiff, don’t force it open or closed. If the inner display is cracked, lifting, flickering, showing new lines or black spots, blank, or not responding to touch, avoid repeatedly folding it.
- Keep the hinge and inner screen clear. Don’t close the phone over grit or a small object, and don’t insert a tool into the hinge or screen edge. Google cautions that the Pixel 11 Pro Fold’s flexible screen is softer than a traditional phone screen and advises keeping particles and sharp objects away. - Don’t peel or replace the inner-screen film yourself. Protector instructions differ by model: Google says not to remove its pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one; Samsung recommends an authorized service center for Galaxy Z protector replacement; and Motorola’s cited Razr guidance says not to use a protector on the internal display. Follow the current instructions for your exact model rather than using generic film. Google; Samsung; Motorola.
- Record the details and protect your data. Note the model, serial number or IMEI, purchase date, and symptoms. Record when the problem began, whether the phone was dropped or exposed to liquid, and whether the display still responds. Back up the phone if possible. Ask the repair provider whether service could erase data or involve a replacement device.
- Check coverage and get an estimate before authorizing work. Use the manufacturer’s coverage and service flow for your model and country. Google says its process uses the IMEI and reported issue to check coverage and estimated repair cost. Coverage depends on the fault and damage: Google’s guidance says some display issues without physical or liquid damage may be eligible, while cracked screens, drop damage, and liquid damage may be excluded. Decide whether the symptom needs service
Changes that warrant a support check
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized provider if the hinge no longer moves normally, or if the inner screen develops new lines, flickering, black spots, a blank display, impaired touch, a crack, or a visibly lifting protector. These symptoms are not a reliable way to identify the failed part, so get a model-specific assessment rather than trying to fix the screen or hinge yourself.
Some behavior can be normal on specific models
Motorola says slight waviness at the fold, unevenness beneath the fold, and sounds during hinge or display movement can be normal on the Razr devices covered by its care page. That guidance is specific to those models; it is not a pass/fail test for other foldables, and it does not establish that every new noise or visual change is harmless. Motorola Razr care guidance.
Choose a repair route
Start with the phone maker’s official support page for your exact model and location. Depending on eligibility and availability, options may include a walk-in repair, mail-in service, or an authorized provider. Don’t assume a hinge or display fault is automatically covered—or automatically excluded. Ask for the diagnosis and estimate before deciding between repair and replacement.

- Coverage: Ask whether the fault qualifies under the warranty or protection plan, and what damage exclusions apply.
- Total cost: Confirm the estimate, including taxes, fees, and any diagnostic charge. Published suggested prices may differ by region or provider.
- Service method and timing: Check whether the service is walk-in or mail-in, and ask how long it is expected to take.
- What happens to the phone: Ask whether you’ll receive the same handset back or a replacement, and whether data may be lost.
- Authorization: For uncertain hinge or inner-screen faults, use the manufacturer or an authorized provider before considering DIY work.
Service figures on manufacturer pages are not universal guarantees. Google’s U.S.-facing guidance says mail-in repairs usually take 7–10 business days and describes walk-in service as the fastest option where available; location and options can vary. Motorola’s U.S. Razr 2026 page says a mail-in repaired or replacement device ships 3–5 business days after receipt and examination. Samsung’s U.S. repair page lists suggested, model-specific prices, says they vary by region and provider and exclude taxes and fees, and offers foldable screen repair by mail. Clean only the surface, gently
If the screen needs routine cleaning, use a soft, lint-free cloth; Google advises against solvents and abrasives. Motorola’s cited guidance also permits lint-free cloths or pre-moistened screen wipes and warns against pressurized-air dusters. Cleaning cannot repair a damaged hinge or display, or remove debris trapped inside the phone. Don’t push anything into the hinge to dislodge particles. Why model and region matter
Protector instructions, coverage, repair methods, prices, and turnaround differ by manufacturer, model, and market. For example, Motorola’s cited Razr 2026 service information applies to U.S. service, while Samsung’s cited support and pricing pages are U.S.-specific. Check the current official page for your exact device and country; don’t apply one brand’s care instructions or warranty terms to another foldable.
