If a scheduled airline flight is showing a delay, check the airline’s live status and contact the airline for passenger updates. If a private or general aviation aircraft may genuinely be overdue, report the concern promptly to local emergency services or the relevant aviation authority; do not wait for a tracker to update or for a fixed number of minutes to pass. U.S. FAA time thresholds are operational procedures, not a universal waiting rule for families.

First, distinguish a delayed flight from a missing-aircraft concern

A commercial flight marked delayed, diverted, or awaiting an arrival estimate is not, by itself, evidence that the aircraft is missing. Airline delay information is intended for passengers; FAA overdue-aircraft procedures describe how aviation facilities handle reports, communications, and alerts. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Flight Delays page explains passenger-facing delay information, not search and rescue.

Situation What is known First contact
Scheduled airline flight The airline reports a delay, diversion, cancellation, or updated arrival estimate. The airline for flight and passenger updates; airport staff for local information.
Possible overdue private or general aviation aircraft There is a credible concern that the aircraft has not arrived or cannot be located or contacted. Local emergency services or the relevant aviation authority or flight-service contact.

These are different response contexts. A missing position on a consumer tracking app is not proof of an emergency, and the absence of a position on a map does not establish that an aircraft has lost contact.

What to do if a scheduled airline flight is late

  1. Check the flight for the correct date and route. Use the carrier’s official flight-status page or app, or the airport information display. Confirm both origin and destination because flight numbers can recur.
  2. Ask the airline for confirmed updates. Contact it through its official channel about a delay, diversion, cancellation, or expected arrival. Airport staff may be able to help with local information, but the airline is the source for updates about its passengers and service.
  3. Escalate a specific, credible safety concern. If you have information such as a reported emergency or a flight that has disappeared from official information, contact local emergency services or the relevant authority. Give the exact flight number and date, route, scheduled times, names if known, and the last known contact.

Who to contact if a small plane may be overdue

If you have a credible reason to think a private or general aviation aircraft is overdue or missing, report the concern promptly to local emergency services or the relevant aviation authority. Do not hold the report while waiting for a flight-tracking service to refresh or trying to decide which technical FAA category applies. For a concern outside the United States, use the country’s own emergency and aviation-reporting system; the FAA procedures below are U.S.-specific.

Give responders the details you have

Report what is known, identify anything uncertain, and do not delay the call to collect every item. Useful details include:

  • Aircraft registration (tail number), aircraft type, or a description.
  • Pilot or operator, and the number of people aboard if known.
  • Departure point, destination, intended route, planned stops, and estimated arrival time.
  • Last contact time and method, plus any credible location, beacon, or tracker information.
  • Possible alternate airports or destinations, if the pilot may have landed elsewhere.

Authorities can verify possible alternate landing locations. FAA materials describe information collection and communications searches as part of overdue-aircraft handling.

U.S. FAA contacts depend on the flight

FAA guidance identifies Flight Service Stations as the central collection and dissemination point for overdue or missing aircraft not on an IFR flight plan. FAA air traffic centers handle relevant IFR and other specified cases. Members of the public can start with local emergency services or an aviation facility rather than determining the aircraft’s technical flight-plan category themselves.

Why the U.S. FAA does not have one public waiting period

FAA time criteria differ according to flight type, whether a flight plan was filed, the reporting point or arrival estimate, and whether radar contact or communications can be established. They guide aviation facilities; they are not instructions for the public to wait before reporting a credible concern. FAA guidance calls for appropriate earlier action when there is reason to believe an aircraft is overdue.

FAA guidance context Stated timing or trigger How to interpret it
Air traffic controller procedures in the FAA Aeronautical Information Manual, Chapter 10, Section 3 Some cases use 30 minutes from a specified event, such as an estimated time over a reporting point or a clearance-void time, when communications and radar contact cannot be established. Operational criteria for aviation facilities. Earlier action is appropriate if there is reason to believe the aircraft is overdue; an abnormal simultaneous loss of radar and communications can prompt immediate emergency procedures in specified cases. FAA, Overdue Aircraft.
FAA Flight Services guidance for VFR/DVFR aircraft on a flight plan 30 minutes past ETA if communication or location cannot be established. A criterion for the specified flight-plan cases, not a public waiting instruction. The guidance also directs earlier action when warranted. FAA Flight Services, Overdue Aircraft.
FAA Flight Services guidance for an aircraft not on a flight plan A different stated criterion involves a reliable report that the aircraft is at least one hour late at its destination. This is not interchangeable with the flight-plan criteria and does not require the public to wait where there is reason for earlier concern. FAA Flight Services, Overdue Aircraft.

These U.S. procedures do not establish rules for other countries. The online FAA guidance cited here does not state a publication date, so the figures above are attributed to the cited FAA material rather than presented as international standards.

What happens after an overdue-aircraft report

FAA guidance describes aviation facilities collecting information, checking communications, issuing information requests or alert notices when applicable, and coordinating with search-and-rescue resources. In the U.S. National Search and Rescue Plan, physical search-and-rescue operations are assigned to military agencies, with FAA facilities supporting alerting and coordination. The precise action depends on the circumstances; a public report does not mean that a specific notice or physical search begins immediately, and the guidance does not promise a fixed response time, search area, or outcome.

The FAA says, “A filed flight plan is the most timely and effective indicator that an aircraft is overdue.” A flight plan helps establish where and when an aircraft is expected and can provide useful information for search planning. The FAA also warns that not telling anyone a destination or route can delay rescue. This is useful context for pilots and operators; it does not replace prompt reporting when a concern arises. If you are the pilot or aircraft operator

  • Use the applicable flight plan, flight-following, operator, or emergency procedures, and contact air traffic control or Flight Service as appropriate.
  • If you are in distress and can communicate, declare the emergency and state your situation and intentions.
  • Before departure, leave a reliable person your destination and route, and file a flight plan where appropriate. That information can help responders determine where the aircraft was expected to be.

FAA Flight Services guidance says a missing-aircraft report is different from a missing-person report; a missing-person matter should be referred to the appropriate authorities.
