If your Ethereum wallet’s private key or seed phrase may have been exposed, treat it as compromised: create a new wallet with fresh credentials and move any remaining assets there as soon as you can do so safely. If you merely lost the credential, first check whether you still have wallet access or a valid backup. With neither, a self-custody wallet cannot be reset by Ethereum or a wallet provider.
First, determine whether the credential is lost or exposed
A seed phrase—also called a recovery phrase or Secret Recovery Phrase—is the master credential from which a wallet can derive accounts. Someone with it may be able to control those accounts and their assets. An individual private key controls one account, so its exposure can put that account at risk. Ethereum.org explains the distinction and warns against sharing either credential. MetaMask provides guidance on recovery phrases and private keys.
- Lost, but the wallet still opens: You may still be able to establish fresh credentials and move assets, depending on the wallet and account setup. Check the provider’s official instructions before deleting, resetting, or uninstalling the wallet.
- Lost, and no wallet access or valid backup remains: A self-custody wallet cannot be reset without its required recovery method. An exchange-hosted account is different; contact the exchange through its official support channel.
- Possibly exposed: Assume someone else could use the credential. If assets remain, prioritize moving them to a new wallet with credentials the suspected attacker has never seen.
- Only a token approval is concerning: An approval gives a smart contract permission to move specified tokens. It is distinct from possession of your signing credential; review and revoke risky approvals, but do not treat revocation as securing an exposed key.
What to do if your seed phrase or private key was exposed
- Stop sharing the secret. Do not enter it into a website, support chat, email, form, or recovery service. Legitimate support does not need your seed phrase or private key. Use Ethereum.org’s security guidance and your wallet provider’s official help pages instead.
- Create a new wallet through a clean, trusted path. Use fresh credentials; never reuse the exposed phrase or key. Keep the new backup private and offline. A hardware wallet can keep the new wallet’s private keys offline, but it does not repair or secure a credential that was already exposed. Ethereum.org describes hardware wallets as an offline key-storage option.
- Move remaining assets to the new wallet. Follow your wallet’s official instructions, carefully verify the destination address and network, and transfer assets as soon as you can do so safely. A confirmed Ethereum transaction is final; if an attacker is already acting, your transfer may fail or be front-run. No source can guarantee that you will move assets first. See Ethereum.org’s scam guidance.
- Review token approvals after addressing the compromised key. Check each network where you used the wallet and revoke malicious or unnecessary allowances. Revocation is an on-chain transaction and may require a network fee. Disconnecting a wallet from a dapp does not revoke its token approvals. Instructions are available in Ethereum.org’s token-access guide and MetaMask’s guidance for unauthorized transactions.
- Secure related accounts. Change passwords on linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication on crypto-related accounts where available. Use only the services’ official account channels.
- Keep evidence if funds were stolen. Save transaction hashes, wallet addresses, and relevant communications for reporting or investigation. Do not pay a stranger who promises to reverse a confirmed transaction.
What to do if the credential is lost
If you can still open the wallet
Do not uninstall or reset it before checking the wallet provider’s official recovery and backup instructions. If you retain access, the wallet may allow you to set up fresh credentials and transfer assets, but the available process depends on the wallet and account type. Do not assume that access can be restored later without the required recovery method.
If you cannot open the wallet and have no valid recovery method
For a self-custody wallet, losing both access and the required seed phrase or private key means there is no central service that can reset it. Ethereum.org’s FAQ says funds in this situation cannot be recovered; MetaMask likewise says it cannot recover a wallet for you. If the account is held by a centralized exchange rather than in a self-custody wallet, use that exchange’s official account-recovery process.

Token approvals are not the same as wallet credentials
A token approval lets a smart contract move specified tokens, sometimes up to an unlimited allowance. Approvals are associated with a network, so check every network on which you used the wallet. You can revoke an unwanted allowance with an on-chain transaction, which may incur a fee. Disconnecting a dapp does not revoke its allowance. Ethereum.org’s guide explains how token access works.
Approval cleanup addresses contract permissions; it does not make an exposed seed phrase or private key safe again. If the signing credential may be compromised, move remaining assets to a fresh wallet first when it is safe to do so. MetaMask’s guidance on unauthorized account transactions also distinguishes account compromise from approval management.

Can Ethereum reverse a transaction or recover stolen funds?
No central Ethereum support team can reverse a confirmed transaction. Recovery depends on exceptional circumstances, such as the recipient voluntarily returning the assets; it is not guaranteed. Ethereum.org’s support page explains that Ethereum is a decentralized network, not a company, and that blockchain transactions are final. Preserve evidence and report the incident through appropriate official channels, but be wary of anyone demanding payment for guaranteed recovery. Ethereum.org’s scam-reporting guidance covers help and reporting options.

Ethereum.org does not hold user accounts or funds, and it will not contact you first. A person claiming to be official Ethereum support, asking for your recovery phrase or private key, or promising guaranteed recovery for a fee is a serious warning sign. Do not disclose secrets or follow unsolicited links; navigate to official help pages yourself. See Ethereum.org’s security guidance and its FAQ.
