Fix any document or data problem and submit through an Aadhaar enrolment centre; online self-service is currently limited to address and document updates. If the request is pending, UIDAI says an update may take up to 90 days—not that every case will be completed by then. For a rejection because you have reached the name-update limit, follow UIDAI’s exception process.
Check the request status and reason
Look up the request through the myAadhaar portal using the acknowledgement details for your request, such as an EID, URN or SRN, as applicable. UIDAI advises checking the status before deciding what to do next. Its Enrolment & Update FAQ says requests may be rejected for document mismatches, discrepancies in submitted information, operator errors, invalid documents, exceeding an update limit or non-compliance with policy.
Read the status and reason carefully. A document or data rejection calls for correcting the underlying problem; a limit-exceeded rejection has a separate exception route. If the status is pending, use the request date to judge how long it has been in process.
If the rejection is about a document or information
Compare the name and other details in the request with the evidence you submitted. Check that you selected the correct document type and that the document is accepted for the update. UIDAI’s guidance identifies issues including evidence that does not bear the applicant’s name, missing self-attestation, transliteration errors, incorrect Aadhaar or mobile details, and images that are not clear scans of original documents.

- Use a currently accepted document in the Aadhaar holder’s name where required; check UIDAI’s current document and update guidance.
- Make sure the entered name matches the supporting evidence, including its spelling and transliteration.
- Provide a clear, high-resolution scan of the original when a scan is required, and self-attest where instructed.
Do not repeatedly submit the same defective evidence. Correct the mismatch first, then make a fresh submission through the right channel. A name update must be filed at an Aadhaar enrolment centre: the online update service currently covers address and document updates, not name changes. If UIDAI says the name-update limit is exceeded
UIDAI’s current guidance allows two name updates under the standard process. If your request is rejected because that limit has been reached, UIDAI describes an exception process; approval is not automatic.

- Review UIDAI’s current Your Aadhaar guidance for the exception instructions that apply to your case.
- For a name change, UIDAI’s guidance calls for enrolment at an Aadhaar centre with a Gazette notification and relevant evidence of the old name. Depending on the reason for the change, the applicable marriage, divorce or adoption document may also be relevant.
- After a limit-exceeded rejection, contact UIDAI to request exception processing through the Regional Office. The guidance refers to the EID on the latest enrolment slip and supporting documents; verify the live requirements before sending sensitive records.
If the request is still pending
UIDAI says an Aadhaar update may take up to 90 days from the request date. This is the stated processing period, not a guaranteed completion date for an individual case. Track the request with its acknowledgement details while it is pending. If it has gone beyond that period or its status is unclear, contact UIDAI rather than submitting the same update again without knowing whether the first request is still active. UIDAI says a refund does not apply when an online request is rejected. Cancellation is different: UIDAI’s guidance describes cancellation from the Requests area only before processing begins, with a refund within 21 days for an eligible cancellation.
