Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you think you invested in a crypto pyramid scheme, stop sending money, contact the exchange or crypto ATM operator you used, save the evidence, and report the fraud. Recovery is uncertain: a report or blockchain trace does not guarantee your funds will be returned. The steps below focus on U.S. reporting channels; readers elsewhere should contact their local consumer-protection and law-enforcement authorities.
What to do first
- Stop all payments. Do not pay purported withdrawal taxes, verification charges, penalties, or additional deposits. The FBI describes investment scams that display fictitious profits, pressure victims to invest more, and then demand fees or taxes when they try to withdraw. It advises victims not to pay those charges or anyone claiming they can recover the funds. FBI guidance
- Contact the provider you used to send the crypto. Quickly tell the exchange or crypto ATM operator that the transaction was fraudulent and ask whether it can be stopped, reversed, or refunded. The provider can explain its own account and transaction procedures; crypto payments are difficult to recover and generally do not have the protections of card payments. FTC cryptocurrency guidance
- Contact the originating payment provider too, if applicable. If you used a bank transfer, card, wire, cash service, or payment app before buying or sending cryptocurrency, contact that bank or service promptly and ask what fraud steps are available. Do not assume it can reverse a completed crypto transfer. FTC steps for people who were scammed
- Save evidence and report the fraud. Preserve records before accounts, messages, or websites disappear, then report to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. The FBI also lists a local field office as an option. The FTC’s cryptocurrency guidance identifies the CFTC complaint channel as another reporting route. Save your complaint confirmations. If you are in immediate danger, or have handed cash or valuables to a courier, contact local emergency or law-enforcement services promptly.
What to save before reporting
Provide what you have; missing details should not stop you from filing a report. IC3 asks for transaction identifiers and context about how the scam worked, including communications and contact details.
- Wallet addresses involved, transaction hash or ID, cryptocurrency type, amount, and date and time.
- Exchange, crypto ATM, bank, payment-app, or wire records, including account and recipient details.
- Website domains, app names, screenshots of balances or blocked withdrawals, and statements showing supposed profits.
- Messages, emails, social-media profiles, phone numbers, usernames, and names used by the people involved.
- A short timeline: how contact began, when you sent funds, when withdrawals failed, and what fees or taxes were demanded.
- Details of any recovery agent or law firm that contacted you, including its contact information and money you may already have paid.
IC3 encourages reporting suspicious activity with the information available, including when transaction details are incomplete. IC3 victim guidance IC3 recovery-scam guidance

Can you get the cryptocurrency back?
Contacting the provider and reporting the fraud are worthwhile, but neither guarantees recovery. The FTC says that after a cryptocurrency payment, “you can usually only get your money back if the person you paid sends it back.” FTC cryptocurrency guidance
A blockchain trace, police report, or civil claim does not automatically return funds. The FBI notes that transfers may reach overseas exchanges and that private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders. Exchanges may freeze accounts through their own processes or in response to legal process, but that does not mean a victim’s funds will be recovered. FBI recovery-scam guidance

Response routes and their limits
| Route | What it can do | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange or crypto ATM operator | Review its own transaction or account procedures. | It may not be able to stop or reverse a completed crypto transfer. FTC |
| FTC, IC3, or law enforcement | Receive a report; law enforcement may investigate. | A report or investigation is not a promise of repayment. FBI |
| Civil litigation | A lawyer can advise whether a civil claim may be appropriate. | It is case-specific and cannot guarantee recovery. FBI |
| Private recovery firm | May offer tracing or other services. | It cannot issue seizure orders; some firms target victims with upfront fees or demands for more money. FBI |
How to spot a recovery scam
After a loss, you may receive unsolicited messages from people claiming to be recovery agents, lawyers, tracing firms, or government officials. Treat guarantees and urgent demands with suspicion. The FBI has warned that fraudulent recovery businesses have taken upfront fees and disappeared or demanded additional payments. FBI recovery-scam alert FBI warning about fictitious law firms
- Do not pay an upfront fee or a new charge supposedly required after a tracing report.
- Do not share seed phrases, private keys, passwords, wallet credentials, or identity and account information with unsolicited contacts.
- Independently verify any lawyer’s identity, bar status, experience, and fee terms before engaging them. The FBI recognizes civil litigation as a possible option, not a guaranteed recovery method. FBI recovery-scam guidance
- Remember that law enforcement does not charge victims a fee to investigate a crime. FBI recovery-scam guidance
Warning signs of a crypto investment scheme
A common pattern described by the FBI begins with unsolicited contact on social media, by text, or through a dating app. The person builds trust, directs the target to a fraudulent investment app or website, displays apparent account growth, pressures them to deposit more, and blocks withdrawals while demanding purported fees or taxes. A convincing dashboard is not proof that funds are invested or can be withdrawn. FBI investment-scam guidance

In a June 15, 2026 warning, the FBI described a variation where scammers direct victims to obtain cash and hand it to couriers for purported crypto investments, then demand taxes or penalties when victims try to withdraw. Do not meet unknown couriers or hand over cash or valuables for an investment. FBI courier-scam warning

How common are reported crypto investment losses?
Historical figures show the scale of reported losses, not an individual victim’s likelihood of recovering money. IC3 reported that victims lost more than $2.5 billion to cryptocurrency investment fraud in 2022. IC3 2022 report In a separate FTC dataset and reporting period, more than half of reported investment-scam losses, totaling $35 million, were in cryptocurrency in 2021. These figures cover different sources and periods and should not be compared as if they were the same dataset. FTC 2021 data discussion
