Tell your workplace IT or security team as soon as possible, and follow its instructions. Be precise about what happened: did you only click, enter a password or other information, download or open a file, or install software? Those actions carry different risks and help responders decide what to do next. Don’t investigate the link yourself or install tools on an employer-managed device.
First, report what happened
Use your organization’s established reporting route, such as its phishing-report button, IT help desk, or security incident channel. If you are unsure which route to use, contact IT or your manager through a known work channel—not by replying to the suspicious message.
Report promptly even if you only clicked and nothing seems to have happened. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) says that building a culture where staff report phishing, including messages they clicked, gives organizations useful information about attacks: NCSC phishing guidance. A click alone does not prove that an account or device was compromised, but your organization can assess it in context.
Tell IT or security, as accurately as you can:
- When you clicked and which device and work account you were using.
- Whether you entered a password, payment information, or other details—and which account or service they were for.
- Whether a file downloaded, you opened an attachment, or you installed or ran anything.
- Whether you noticed a sign-in prompt, browser warning, unexpected page, or unusual account activity.
If you still have the message, preserve it and follow your organization’s reporting procedure. Don’t forward it to colleagues or click the link again unless IT specifically asks you to do so.

If you clicked but did not enter or download anything
If you only opened the link and did not submit information, download a file, or install software, the NCSC says further action is unlikely to be needed; it still advises watching for suspicious account activity. Because this happened at work, report it through your employer’s process and let IT decide whether any additional checks are appropriate. See the NCSC’s advice on suspicious emails.
Don’t revisit the page to test it or try to determine whether it was malicious. The organization can review the message and available security information without asking you to take that risk.

If you entered a password or other information
Tell IT or security what you submitted and which account it belongs to. If you entered a work password, coordinate with them on changing it and responding to the account; they may need to take steps such as reviewing sign-ins or ending active sessions.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises businesses to change compromised passwords promptly. If you reused the same password on personal or other work accounts, change those passwords too, using each service’s legitimate site or app rather than a link in the message. The NCSC also advises changing reused passwords when a work device or account may be affected. Follow your employer’s process for work accounts, and tell IT if you cannot change a password yourself. If you submitted personal, financial, or other sensitive information, say exactly what it was. Your organization can assess what may have been exposed and what response is appropriate.
If you downloaded a file, opened an attachment, or installed software
Contact IT or security immediately and explain what you downloaded or opened, whether you ran it, and whether you followed any installation instructions. Don’t delete files, run a cleanup tool, or install security software on a managed device unless responders tell you to; those actions can interfere with the organization’s response.

The FTC advises disconnecting an infected device from the network. In a workplace, ask IT or security how to contain the device rather than making assumptions about whether it is infected or disconnecting it in a way that conflicts with your employer’s procedures. The NCSC advises running antivirus software after opening a suspicious link or following instructions to install software, but on a work device that should be coordinated with your organization’s responders—not treated as a substitute for reporting. Security responders—not individual employees—may examine the message, identify other recipients, establish who clicked, opened files, or submitted credentials, and investigate relevant account and device activity. Answer responders’ questions honestly and promptly. If you are asked to preserve a message or device, or to take a specific containment step, follow their instructions. The NCSC’s workplace guidance explicitly says that if something goes wrong on an organization-provided device or account, report it to IT support: NCSC device security guidance.
If personal information may have been exposed
Tell your organization what information you believe was submitted or made accessible. The FTC says affected people should be notified when their personal information has been compromised. Whether notification to individuals, regulators, or other parties is legally required depends on the incident and applicable law; there is no single rule established for every workplace phishing incident by the guidance cited here. Your organization should assess its obligations for the facts and jurisdictions involved.
