First, find out which Windows 11 requirement your PC fails; don’t assume you need a new computer or try to bypass the check. Run Microsoft PC Health Check or check Windows Update, then address the specific issue: some problems are settings or upgradeable parts, while others—such as an unsupported processor—may mean the PC cannot qualify. If it remains ineligible, Microsoft does not support installing Windows 11 on it and does not guarantee updates.
Identify the requirement that failed
On a personal Windows 10 PC, open Microsoft PC Health Check and select Check now. The app reports whether the device meets Windows 11’s requirements and can explain why it is ineligible. Windows Update can also assess eligibility. These checks are intended for personal PCs; if your device is managed by an employer or school, ask the IT administrator about eligibility and upgrade options.
Compare the result with Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications. The baseline includes:
- A compatible processor on Microsoft’s approved CPU list, running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores.
- At least 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability.
- TPM version 2.0.
- DirectX 12 or later graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver.
- An HD display with 720p resolution and a diagonal larger than 9 inches.
Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro also require an internet connection and Microsoft account during initial setup. Passing one requirement does not compensate for failing another.

If the warning is about TPM
Check Windows Security > Device security > Security processor details. If Windows Security does not show a Security processor entry, the PC may lack the required TPM hardware or TPM may be disabled in UEFI firmware. Check the PC maker’s support information for your exact model before changing firmware settings or buying parts. Microsoft’s TPM guidance explains how to check and enable the feature.
If the warning is about Secure Boot
Secure Boot works with UEFI. On some PCs, firmware configured for Legacy or CSM boot makes Secure Boot appear unavailable even though the hardware supports it. Changing boot mode may be necessary, but firmware menus and configurations vary by model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing: an incorrect boot-mode change can prevent the existing Windows installation from starting. See Microsoft’s Secure Boot guidance.

If the warning is about memory or storage
Check the computer maker’s service documentation to see whether RAM or storage can be upgraded. Do not assume either part is replaceable; some PCs have components that cannot be upgraded. If you change hardware, check the eligibility again afterward.
If the warning is about the processor or another fixed requirement
The processor must appear on Microsoft’s approved list. Its clock speed and core count are characteristics of the processor, not settings that can be upgraded. If your PC has an unsupported CPU or another requirement it cannot meet, adding RAM or storage will not make it eligible.

Recheck after making a change
- After enabling a supported firmware feature or upgrading a component, run PC Health Check again.
- If Windows Update still shows the old eligibility result, allow up to 24 hours for its assessment to refresh.
- If the PC is eligible but Windows Update does not offer the upgrade immediately, wait: Microsoft stages the rollout using device factors, so eligibility does not guarantee an immediate offer.
Microsoft describes the refresh delay and staged rollout in its Windows 11 installation guidance.

| Option | When it makes sense | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Enable a supported firmware feature | The failed item is TPM or Secure Boot, and the PC supports it. | Use instructions for the exact PC model; firmware steps vary. |
| Upgrade RAM or storage | One of those requirements fails and the manufacturer supports an upgrade. | Check service documentation and the cost before purchasing parts. |
| Keep using the PC as it is | The device still meets your needs and you have considered its operating system’s support status. | Standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Check Microsoft’s current options for your situation. |
| Move to a compatible PC | A central requirement cannot be met safely or economically. | Verify the specific model against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements. |
Microsoft does not recommend Windows 11 on ineligible hardware. Its support article says unsupported devices may have compatibility problems and are not guaranteed updates, including security updates. If Windows 11 is already installed on an ineligible device, Microsoft recommends rolling back to Windows 10 immediately. If available, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. The option may not be available on every device. Read Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance.
