If a player’s threat suggests immediate physical danger, get somewhere safe and contact the emergency number where you are. Otherwise, save the message and account details if you can, report the player through the game or platform, mute or block them, and tell someone you trust. You can report a threat even if you have no screenshot.
First decide whether you are in immediate danger
Take a threat seriously if the person says they are coming to you, shares details about where you are, appears to be nearby, or otherwise makes you fear imminent physical harm. Move to a safer place and contact your local emergency service. The FBI directs people in the United States who are in immediate physical danger to call 911; Police.uk identifies immediate danger to life and threatened violence as emergencies for 999 in the UK. Those numbers are jurisdiction-specific: use the emergency number for your location.
Do not keep chatting, challenge the person, or try to investigate who they are to test whether the threat is real. Get help first.
Save what you can, but do not wait to report
If it is safe and quick, preserve the message, chat, voice note, or recording before it disappears. Keep the original content where possible and note the exact wording, the sender’s displayed name and user ID, the game or platform, and the date and time. A screenshot or recording can help explain what happened, but lack of one should not stop you from asking for help.

The FBI advises preserving electronic evidence and not deleting threat messages. Police.uk says you do not need to gather screenshots, messages, videos, or photos before reporting. These points are compatible: save available evidence, but report promptly even if you have none.
Stop further contact and report the account
Mute, block, or adjust privacy settings
Use the game’s or platform’s mute, ignore, block, and privacy controls to limit contact. If safe and practical, preserve relevant content first, since blocking or changing access can make it harder to find later on some services. Do not delay an urgent report to capture it. The Australian eSafety Commissioner’s gaming guidance recommends collecting evidence, then reporting and blocking abusive players.

Submit a report through the game or platform
Use the game’s report function or the reporting tools of the connected console, store, or platform. Provide the account identifier and incident details, and attach the message or recording if the form allows it. Keep any confirmation or reference number. Menus vary by game and device; Rockstar’s instructions for GTA Online on PC are one product-specific example, not a universal route.
For adults using Australia’s eSafety cyber abuse scheme, reporting the content to the platform first is generally part of that process. That is an Australia-specific route, not a rule that you must complete before contacting police elsewhere.

Contact police when the threat raises a safety concern
Consider contacting local police if a threat is specific or repeated, refers to your real-world identity or location, suggests planned violence, or otherwise makes you concerned for your safety. A hostile or upsetting remark is not automatically a crime; legal definitions and reporting routes vary by location, and the available guidance does not establish a single worldwide test.
In the United States, the FBI advises contacting a local field office or submitting a tip at tips.fbi.gov for threats associated with federal crimes. It notes that incidents below the federal-crime threshold may need to be reported to local police. In the UK, Police.uk provides routes for reporting threatening messages. Use the agency appropriate to your location and the level of danger.

Tell someone you trust
Let a trusted friend, family member, adult, or support professional know what happened, especially if you are young, frightened, or unsure what to do. They can help preserve details, make a platform report, and think through next steps with you. The eSafety Commissioner recommends speaking with someone trusted and points young people to services such as Kids Helpline. You do not have to manage a threatening interaction alone.

Preserve the messages and account identifiers, review your privacy and security settings, and contact the platform. If the person appears to know your location or identity, or your physical safety may be at risk, contact local authorities as appropriate. The FBI also recommends strong security settings for accounts and devices. These steps can help you respond, but no single setting guarantees that personal information cannot be exposed.
