If someone is harassing you on a dating app, get to safety first if there is an immediate physical threat. Otherwise, save relevant details if it is safe, report the person through the app, then block or unmatch to limit further contact. You do not have to confront them or keep talking to gather evidence.
What to do first
- Deal with immediate danger. If you are at immediate risk of physical harm, move somewhere safer and contact your local emergency authorities. Tinder Help gives the same direction: “If you or someone else is in immediate physical danger, please contact your local authorities right away.” An in-app report is not an emergency response.
- Save what you can safely access. If you feel able, keep the person’s profile name and identifying details, relevant messages, screenshots, dates, and a short factual account of what happened. Do not risk your safety or prolong contact to collect information. Tinder recommends including profile details and says screenshots are best for reports by email; Bumble suggests screenshots when contacting support after an unmatch.
- Report the behavior in the app. Choose the report reason that most accurately describes what happened, and add concise context. Report harassment even if contact continued off the app: Tinder Safety Center says, “Do report harassment on and off the app.” Tinder also says non-consensual sexually explicit content can be reported even after a conversation moves elsewhere.
- Stop or reduce further contact. Use the app’s block or unmatch controls. If the person has contacted you through other channels, consider blocking them there too. Reporting, blocking, and unmatching are distinct actions; follow the app’s current prompts rather than assuming one automatically does the others.
How to report someone on Tinder
Report a profile or match
According to Tinder Help’s “Reporting profiles and content” guidance, updated December 27, 2024:
- In Discovery: Open the profile, tap the three dots, and choose Report.
- From a match: Open the chat, tap the three dots, and choose Report.
Give the reason and details you have, such as the person’s exact name, age, bio, photos, and any known location, phone number, or email. Tinder recommends screenshots, particularly for a report by email. If the labels or layout have changed, use Tinder’s current reporting instructions.
Report harassment or explicit content that moved off the app
Tinder’s What to Report guidance says to report harassment whether it happened on or off the app, including non-consensual sexually explicit content shared after a conversation moved elsewhere. You can also consult Tinder Help’s guidance on reporting in-person physical harm. Do not assume that moving a conversation off-platform makes your report invalid.

What happens after a Tinder report?
Tinder says the reported account will no longer appear in your match list or while you are swiping. A Trust & Safety team member reviews the matter and decides next steps under Tinder’s Community Guidelines. Tinder may send a generic notice that a report led to an account review, but privacy limits mean it may not share specific details. A review does not guarantee account removal, and Tinder does not state a response timeline in its What Happens After I Report? guidance.

If you already unmatched
If the profile or chat is no longer available, contact Bumble Support. Share the person’s name, the reason for the report, and screenshots if you have them. Bumble says reports are private and anonymous and that you can track progress in the Help Hub. These are Bumble’s stated procedures, not a promise about the outcome. Its safety features guidance also describes reporting support after an unmatch.
Should you save screenshots before blocking?
If you can do so safely and without delaying a needed block or emergency help, save screenshots and relevant details before access to the profile or conversation disappears. You can also note dates and write a brief, factual summary. You are not required to preserve evidence before protecting yourself: if keeping the conversation open feels unsafe or distressing, block or unmatch first and report using the information you still have.

Can you report someone after unmatching?
Yes, if you still have enough information to identify the person or describe what happened. Bumble directs users who have unmatched to contact support with the person’s name, report reason, and screenshots if available. If Tinder’s profile or chat route is no longer available, use Tinder Help’s reporting options. App procedures can change, so check the platform’s current support page; do not re-engage the person just to regain access.
When to seek help beyond the app
If the conduct involves threats, sexual violence, or serious distress, consider support suited to your location and circumstances. Tinder Help lists RAINN for sexual violence resources, ThroughLine and BEAM for finding local mental health or crisis support, and The Trevor Project for LGBTQIA+ assistance. These are starting points, not a complete directory, and availability depends on where you are. Laws and reporting options also vary by location; for advice about your circumstances, contact an appropriate local service or authority.

What to expect from reporting
A report gives the platform information to review; it does not guarantee that an account will be removed or that the platform will share its decision. The Australian Institute of Criminology’s November 2020 report No. 612 discusses app safety mechanisms and their limits, but it is historical and Australia-specific, not a description of every app’s current procedures or the law where you live. Keep your expectations focused on what you can control: reporting through the available channel and choosing whether to limit contact.
