If Gemini misses an email, gives an inaccurate summary, or gets a label wrong, first identify which Gmail feature produced the result. The side panel, AI Overviews, inbox summaries, and label actions have different access rules and controls. Search for the message in Gmail, check the original thread, then use the setting or feedback option that applies to that specific feature.

Identify which Gmail feature is having the problem

“Gemini in Gmail” can mean several different things. Pinpoint the one that failed before changing settings:

  • Gemini side panel: You ask Gemini questions or search for information across email.
  • AI Overview: Gmail displays a generated overview at the top of an open conversation or above search results.
  • Inbox message summary: A short generated summary appears beneath a message subject in the inbox.
  • Label action: Gemini describes a label incorrectly or takes an action that changes a message’s labels.

Google documents these as distinct capabilities, and its feature availability information and inbox-summary guidance cover different controls. A fix for one experience may not affect another.

Check that the email is actually in Gmail

Before relying on Gemini to retrieve a message, search for it directly in Gmail. Try a sender, a date range, unread status, or a distinctive subject or phrase. Then use the same details in a focused Gemini request—for example, ask for unread messages from a particular person or messages received during a specific period. Google provides examples of these types of requests in its Gmail Gemini guidance.

If Gmail search finds the email but Gemini leaves it out, treat that as a limitation of the generated answer, not proof that the message is missing. Use Gmail’s results and the original message as the record.

Verify an inaccurate summary against the conversation

Open the original thread and read the relevant messages, especially the latest replies. A generated summary can omit context or misstate a decision, so do not use it as the sole basis for a consequential action.

If the summary is too broad, ask a narrower question, such as “List the decisions and action items in this thread,” or ask about a specific message. If the answer remains wrong, use the feedback control beneath the generated result. Google’s help describes choosing Bad suggestion, selecting the issue, and adding feedback. Avoid including personal, sensitive, or confidential information in submitted feedback; Google notes this caution for enterprise end users.

Google warns that “Gemini features may suggest inaccurate or inappropriate information.” That applies even when a feature is available and functioning normally.

Check inbox-summary display settings on Android

These checks apply to the short summaries shown beneath subjects in the inbox—not to side-panel email search or every AI Overview. Google’s Android guidance says the summaries may appear for some messages but not others. To check the documented conditions:

  1. Update the Gmail app to the latest version.
  2. Confirm that the account has an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan.
  3. Make sure Google Workspace smart features are enabled.
  4. Turn on Conversation view.
  5. In Gmail’s conversation-list settings, choose Default or Comfortable density. Compact density prevents these summaries from appearing.

Google lists these requirements in its Gmail inbox-summary help page. Meeting them does not guarantee that every message will have a summary.

Confirm eligibility for the exact feature

Access varies by feature and can depend on account type or plan, language, platform, geography, and rollout. One Gemini feature working in Gmail does not establish that another is available to the same account. Check Google’s current feature-by-feature availability page for the specific experience and account. Its availability can change as Google expands access.

Language support is also feature-specific. Google maintains separate information for the side panel and AI Overview summaries; do not assume that a language listed for one is supported by all Gmail Gemini features. See Google’s Gmail language guidance alongside the availability page.

Handle possible security-related omissions safely

Google says Gemini may exclude content—or sometimes decline to use any message content in a response—when it detects a potential prompt-injection risk. An omission in that situation is not a reason to disable safeguards or follow suspicious instructions in the email.

If a message appears deceptive or asks you to follow suspicious links or instructions, inspect it cautiously and report it as phishing through Gmail when appropriate. Google explains the possible omission in its Gmail Gemini guidance.

Check the actual labels in Gmail

A mistaken statement about a label is different from Gemini changing a message’s labels. If Gemini performed an organization action, inspect the message in Gmail and check its actual labels; correct them there if needed.

Google documents label actions in limited contexts and instructs users to review the confirmation card or matched messages before confirming. The documentation does not promise automatic correction of a mistaken label. Verify the selected messages and the resulting Gmail state rather than relying on Gemini’s description of what it did.
