If an iOS update is stuck or won’t install, first check that your iPhone supports the release and note the exact alert or screen. Then match the fix to the problem: free storage for a download that will not start, use a reliable Wi‑Fi connection for a slow download, retry on another network for verification errors, and keep the phone powered during installation. Use a Mac or PC if wireless troubleshooting fails; reserve recovery mode for more serious symptoms.
Start with the exact error and your iPhone model
Before changing settings, write down the full alert and identify your iPhone model. Apple lists several broad causes of wireless update trouble: the model may not support the release, storage may be insufficient, the download may be slow, the update server may be unreachable, or the update may not complete. Those problems have different remedies.
Compare your model with Apple’s supported-device list for the iOS release you are trying to install. Do not assume that every iPhone supports the newest iOS. Apple’s current iPhone update guide also lists alerts such as “Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update.” and “Unable to Download. This update requires a Wi-Fi network connection to download.” Wording can vary, so use the message on your screen to decide which steps to try.
If the update will not download or says storage is low
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- If available, turn on Offload Unused Apps. You can also delete apps you no longer need.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again.
Offloading temporarily removes an app while keeping its documents and data, allowing the app to be downloaded again later. Deleting an app is a separate choice, so review what you no longer need before removing it.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the download is slow
Connect to Wi‑Fi and pause other large downloads. Download time depends on the update’s size and your internet speed; Apple does not give a universal download time. You can continue using the iPhone while the update downloads, and it will notify you when the update is ready to install.
If the server cannot be reached or verification fails
- Retry the update on your current network.
- If the same alert returns, try another Wi‑Fi network. Avoid using a personal hotspot for this troubleshooting step; Apple’s server guidance recommends a regular network.
- If the problem continues across networks, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage, find the downloaded update, tap it, choose Delete Update, then return to Settings > General > Software Update to download it again.
- If the update is not listed or the download still fails, try updating with a Mac or PC.
If installation looks stuck
A slow progress bar by itself does not prove that installation has failed. Keep the iPhone connected to power and give the process time to continue. Apple notes that progress can appear slow and that timing depends on the update size and the files on the device; it does not specify a number of minutes that proves a bar is stuck.

Apple Support’s instruction is: “When you’re updating wirelessly, keep your device connected to a power source.” If the battery ran out, connect the phone to power and turn it on so the update or restore can complete. If the iPhone is frozen or will not start, use Apple’s guidance for a frozen device or recovery mode rather than repeatedly interrupting the installation.
Try updating with a Mac or PC
If the wireless route continues to fail, connect the iPhone directly to a computer. Use Finder on a Mac, or the current Apple Devices app or iTunes on a PC, as applicable. Apple’s computer update and restore error guidance recommends updating the computer’s software, connecting the iPhone directly to a USB port instead of a hub or keyboard, and checking the cable and port. For certain errors, use the cable supplied with the device or another Apple-certified USB cable.

Match the cable connector to both the iPhone and computer. A cable change addresses a computer connection issue; it will not fix an unrelated Wi‑Fi, storage, or compatibility problem.

Recovery mode may be appropriate if a computer does not recognize the iPhone, the phone shows a recovery screen, or an Apple logo remains onscreen for several minutes without a progress bar. Follow Apple’s recovery instructions for your exact iPhone model because the button sequence varies.
