If an electric balloon pump is smoking, sparking, burning, or has just exploded, move everyone away. If there is smoke or fire, get outside and call your local emergency number from a safe place. Do not go back inside to retrieve the pump or belongings.
What to do immediately
- Get people away from the pump. If there is smoke or fire, evacuate the building. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service’s UK instruction is “GET OUT, STAY OUT AND CALL 999”; elsewhere, call the local emergency number. Do not re-enter for the pump or possessions. - Call emergency services from safety. Do not try to handle an incident with substantial smoke, a spreading fire, or a fire that blocks your exit.
- Cut power only if you can do it safely. Pull the plug or switch off the supply only if you can reach it without approaching flame, smoke, damaged wiring, or another hazard. Do not approach a burning or badly damaged pump to unplug it. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service advises switching off power if it is safe; Delhi Fire Service: Fire Safety Precautions Against Electricity also advises de-energizing affected equipment.
- Never pour water on an electrical fire. Prioritize evacuation and emergency services over attempting to extinguish it. Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service.
If someone may have been shocked or exposed
Do not touch a person who may still be in contact with electricity. The CDC advises: “Look first. Don’t touch. The person may still be in contact with the electrical source.” Call emergency medical help, and switch off the source only if you can do so safely. Electrical shock can cause burns inside the body, so seek medical evaluation even if an injury is not obvious. CDC: What to Do to Protect Yourself From Electrical Hazards.
Smoke, flames, or flying debris can also cause injury. If the pump is confirmed to contain a battery and someone was exposed to smoke or vapours, flames, flying debris, or electrolyte, Fire and Rescue NSW advises urgent medical assistance. What to do with the pump and electrical supply afterward
- Do not plug in or use a pump that burned, sparked, exploded, or has a damaged cord. The U.S. Fire Administration says to replace an appliance with a cracked, damaged, or loose cord. U.S. Fire Administration: Appliance and Electrical Fire Safety.
- Contact the retailer, manufacturer, or a qualified repair technician about a potentially faulty appliance, as Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service recommends. Do not assume the pump is the only equipment affected.
- If an outlet, wiring, or other electrical equipment may have been affected or become wet, do not restore power or use it until it has been inspected by a qualified electrical professional. The CDC says not to turn power back on until electrical equipment has been inspected and is completely dry. CDC.
Extinguisher advice is for preparedness, not a reason to stay
Delhi Fire Service lists dry sand, CO2, dry powder, or Halon extinguishers as options for electrical fires. This is jurisdiction-dependent guidance, not a recommendation for a particular extinguisher model or a reason to fight a fire. Follow your local fire service and the extinguisher label, and only consider an extinguisher for a small fire if you can use it without delaying escape or putting yourself at risk. If there is significant smoke, a spreading fire, or no clear exit, leave and call emergency services.
