Do not take a medicine or choose a dose based on an AI reading that you are unsure about. Ask the prescribing clinician or dispensing pharmacist to check the original prescription and confirm the medicine and directions. If the medicine has already been dispensed and it does not match what you expected, contact the pharmacy before using it.
What to do before taking anything
- Pause. Do not guess what an unclear medicine name, strength, or instruction says, and do not treat the AI output as confirmation of the prescriber’s intent.
- Contact the dispensing pharmacist or prescribing clinician. Ask them to compare the original prescription with the intended medicine and directions. Keep the handwritten prescription or image available so they can check the same text.
- Confirm the details explicitly. Ask about the medicine name, strength, dose, route, and schedule. If any part remains unclear, ask for clarification before taking a dose based on the uncertain reading.
AHRQ advises patients to get answers about a new prescription before taking it. It also cautions that if a patient cannot read the doctor’s handwriting, the pharmacist may not be able to either: AHRQ, Your Medicine: Be Smart. Be Safe.
If the medicine has already been dispensed
Check the medicine and dose against what you expected, and contact the pharmacist if anything looks different or you are uncertain. FDA advises patients to check the medicine and dose before leaving the pharmacy and ask about differences. Do not use the AI reading alone to decide that a mismatch is harmless: FDA’s Stop – Learn – Go guide.
If you have already taken a dose
Contact a pharmacist or prescriber promptly and explain what you took, when you took it, and what remains uncertain. Ask for advice specific to the medicine and circumstances. The appropriate next step can depend on those details, so do not try to correct a possible mistake by changing or repeating a dose based on the AI transcription. If you need immediate help, use the urgent-care or emergency services available where you are.

What an AI reading can and cannot tell you
A machine-generated transcription is a guess at the writing, not confirmation of what the prescriber intended. The sources cited here do not validate AI systems for interpreting handwritten prescriptions, so an unclear medicine or dose should be confirmed by a healthcare professional rather than inferred from the output. AHRQ’s warning that even a pharmacist may have difficulty reading unclear handwriting underscores why an AI result should not settle the question.
Electronic prescriptions are generally easier to read and include safeguards intended to reduce medication errors, according to MedlinePlus. That general point does not establish how accurate any consumer AI reader is.

Reporting a medication error in the United States
If you believe a medication error occurred, FDA accepts reports through MedWatch and encourages reporting. Reporting does not confirm the correct prescription or provide treatment, so first resolve immediate questions with a pharmacist or prescriber. See FDA’s medication-error information and FDA’s guidance on pharmacists and medication safety. These reporting details are for the U.S.; other countries have their own reporting systems.
