A false signature alone does not prove copyright infringement, so use a copyright complaint only if you can identify a protected work that was infringed and you have authority to complain.
Preserve the post and its context
Before the image or account disappears, save enough information to identify exactly what you are reporting:
- A copy or screenshot of the image and the surrounding post or page.
- The post or page URL, account name, and date you found it.
- Any text claiming the image is your work, was created by you, or bears your genuine signature.
- Copies of reports you submit and any replies from the platform.
Keep the original files where possible, and avoid altering the evidence. This information helps the platform locate the material. For a U.S. copyright notice, the DMCA also requires identifying the copyrighted work and the allegedly infringing material with enough detail for the service to find it: U.S. Copyright Office DMCA information.
Report the image to the platform hosting it
Use the service’s reporting process and describe the problem accurately. If someone is presenting the image as your work, explain the false attribution; if an account is pretending to be you, report impersonation; if the image is manipulated, use a manipulated-media or synthetic-media category when available. Include the saved URL and explain that the signature or attribution is not genuine.

TikTok
TikTok’s help page gives an example of a report route for AI impersonation: report the post, choose “Misinformation,” then “Deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated media,” and submit it. The described flow is for TikTok, and interface wording may change: TikTok: AI-generated content.
Google Gemini-generated likeness content
Google has a complaint route for certain images or videos of a person generated or altered by another user with Gemini tools. Its help page says the process requires a personal Google Account, a complainant aged 18 or older, and availability in a region where selfie verification is supported. It is not a general complaint route for every AI image: for content made with third-party AI tools, Google directs users to the relevant provider’s policies. See Google Gemini’s reporting guidance.

Choose the right type of complaint

Why a false signature is not automatically a copyright claim
Copyright concerns rights in a protected work, not simply whether a person’s name appears on an image. A U.S. DMCA notice is a formal copyright procedure: it identifies the copyrighted work and the allegedly infringing material and requires other statements. Submit one only when its factual and ownership basis is accurate and you are the copyright owner or an authorized agent. The U.S. Copyright Office explains the notice process at its DMCA directory.
There is also a separate question of whether an AI-generated output is protected by copyright. In its 2025 report, the U.S. Copyright Office said protection may apply when a human author determined sufficient expressive elements—for example, through human-authored material perceptible in the output or creative arrangement or modification. Mere prompting, the report says, is insufficient. A signature naming you does not itself establish that you own the generated image: U.S. Copyright Office AI materials.

When location or image type changes the next step
If you are in the European Union
The European Commission says transparency obligations under Article 50 of the AI Act apply from 2 August 2026 and include certain deepfakes, with defined scope and exceptions. That does not mean every falsely signed artwork is necessarily a covered deepfake, or that the rule supplies a universal remedy for false attribution. See the Commission’s AI Act regulatory framework.
If the image is an intimate image shared without consent
This is different from ordinary AI art bearing a false signature. FTC guidance says platforms covered by the Take It Down Act must provide a reporting mechanism and remove covered intimate images and copies within 48 hours after a request. The FTC also explains how to report a covered platform that fails to comply. The rule is not a general takedown deadline for ordinary AI-generated art or false signatures: FTC Take It Down Act compliance guide and FTC report portal.

When to get legal advice
Consider speaking with a lawyer familiar with your jurisdiction and the relevant rights if the false attribution is being used commercially, is causing significant reputational or financial harm, or continues after you report it. The appropriate legal options depend on where you are and how the image is being used; a false signature does not establish one universal claim.
