If an AI assistant repeats private information, gives personal details about you, or appears to show your conversation to someone else, save the exact evidence first. Then identify whether the issue is the assistant’s response, information you provided, an outside source, or possible account access—and make a request to the service that can address that specific problem. The right steps and legal options depend on the service and your location.
First identify what happened
Different incidents call for different remedies. Use this distinction to decide where to start:
| What you noticed | What to address | First move |
|---|---|---|
| You entered personal information in a chat | Information held in your account or by the service | Ask the provider about access to or deletion of account data, if available. |
| The assistant generated a personal detail about you | An inaccurate, sensitive, outdated, or otherwise harmful response | Save the output and ask the provider to correct or remove the specific information from responses. |
| Someone else appears to have seen conversation content | Possible disclosure, sharing, or unauthorized access | Record how you learned about it and preserve any sharing or access context; report the concern to the provider. |
| You see signs of an unfamiliar person using your account | Possible account compromise | Use the provider’s current official account-recovery and security instructions. |
These possibilities can overlap. For example, a personal detail in an answer may have come from information you typed, a source page, or an error in generated text; the response alone may not establish which.
Preserve evidence without spreading the information
Before deleting a conversation or submitting a report, save enough context for the provider to understand the issue. Keep a copy somewhere secure, and avoid reposting sensitive material or sending it to people who do not need it.

- Any URL the assistant cited, plus a note about whether the information is inaccurate, sensitive, outdated, or visible to another person.
- For a possible disclosure, the visible sharing setting, link, recipient, or other circumstance that makes you think someone else could access the conversation.
Be precise about what is wrong. OpenAI’s Help Center guidance says it assesses personal-data claims using information supplied with a request and cannot independently investigate disputed facts.
Secure the account if access may be unauthorized
If you have evidence of unfamiliar access, follow the named provider’s current official recovery and security instructions rather than relying on a generic settings path: controls differ among services and can change. If the account is provided by an employer or school, notify the organization’s IT or security team and follow its incident-response process. If you cannot sign in, use the provider’s official recovery route.

For children, threats, intimate imagery, or financial identifiers, limit further sharing and seek the provider’s current instructions and relevant local authority guidance promptly. Do not assume that one chatbot’s controls apply to another.
Ask the provider for the remedy you actually need
A request to remove a detail from responses is not necessarily the same as a request to access or delete account data. State the outcome you want and identify the specific information and conversation involved. Depending on the service, you may need to submit separate requests for separate remedies.

For ChatGPT: request removal from responses
OpenAI’s Help Center describes a Privacy Portal route called “Remove personal data from ChatGPT responses.” Its guidance says a request may be submitted even without a ChatGPT account, by the person concerned or a legally authorized representative. OpenAI recommends providing specific examples, relevant chat links and URLs, the type of personal data, and why removal is necessary. It may ask for documents to verify identity or authority.
OpenAI says it reviews each request in context, considering factors such as accuracy, relevance, sensitivity, public interest, impact, and whether information comes from an official source. Removal is not guaranteed: the company says it may decline when there is a lawful reason. If the response is inaccurate, explain what is wrong and provide supporting information rather than treating the generated text as proof that the claim is true.

For other assistants: use that provider’s own privacy process
Find the privacy request option in the service’s current official privacy policy or help center. Do not assume that another provider offers the same portal, controls, eligibility, or outcome. Describe whether you are seeking access to account data, correction of an inaccurate detail, deletion of account data where available, or prevention of a particular detail appearing in responses.
Contact the original website or search service separately
Removing personal data from an AI assistant’s responses does not remove the underlying information from external websites or search engines. OpenAI’s guidance makes this distinction explicitly. If the answer points to a source page, contact the site responsible for that page to request correction or removal as appropriate; if a search result continues to expose it, use that search service’s own removal or outdated-content process. Each service controls a different copy.

Escalate through the appropriate regulator
Privacy rights, complaint procedures, and regulatory authority depend on where you live and which law applies. Start with the privacy regulator for your jurisdiction and follow its official complaint route; an investigation or complaint process is not automatically a ruling that a company violated the law.
United Kingdom
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) provides an official route to submit a data-protection concern. In a February 3, 2026 statement about its investigation into X and xAI’s processing related to Grok, the ICO said it was examining whether data-protection law had been followed and had not yet reached a view on whether there was sufficient evidence of infringement. The ICO also described the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 maximum penalty as £17.5 million or 4% of an organization’s annual worldwide turnover, whichever is higher. That is an enforcement ceiling, not compensation an individual complainant should expect to receive.
Canada
On May 6, 2026, Canada’s federal Privacy Commissioner and counterparts in Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta announced findings from their joint ChatGPT investigation. The offices identified problems involving initial training and deployment, including overcollection, consent and transparency, inaccuracies involving personal information, access, correction and deletion concerns, and accountability. The federal commissioner described the complaint as well-founded and conditionally resolved after OpenAI’s measures and commitments; provincial conclusions varied under the laws each office enforced. These were jurisdiction-specific findings, not a universal rule for every AI service or country. In the release, Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne said, “Appropriate safeguards are the cornerstone of responsible innovation.”
What published figures and inquiries can—and cannot—tell you
OpenAI’s privacy-rights report, published June 28, 2026, says the company received 6,705,206 deletion requests globally during 2025, completed 6,688,198 in whole or in part, denied 17,008, and averaged less than three days to respond. These are company-reported aggregate figures across deletion requests; they do not give a success rate for requests to remove personal data from ChatGPT responses or predict an individual decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn September 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said it had issued inquiries to seven companies about chatbot impacts on children and teens, including how personal information from conversations might be used or shared. The FTC described this as a study under its 6(b) authority, not a specific law-enforcement finding.
Quick Recap
Keep expectations realistic
- A provider’s review may result in removal, a partial response, or a denial; OpenAI says its decision depends on the context and applicable lawful interests.
- Removing a response is separate from removing information on the websites or search engines where it may also appear.
- The cited guidance does not establish a universal technical effect or timetable for removing information from model training data or every stored system.
- The available sources do not establish a single breach-notification deadline for consumers, an automatic right to compensation, or one regulator responsible for every case.
