First, check every box, bag, fold and pocket in the packaging, then use the IKEA assembly instructions to identify exactly what is missing. If it is numbered hardware, try IKEA’s spare-parts service for your country. For an unnumbered or larger component, contact IKEA with the product details and ask whether it can help; service for IKEA’s own As-Is items is not a guarantee for a private second-hand purchase.
1. Make sure the part is actually missing
Before ordering anything, confirm how many packages the product should have and inspect all of them. Small fittings can be tucked into cardboard folds or bags, and some IKEA products come in multiple boxes. Compare what you have with the assembly instructions rather than relying on a seller’s description or memory.

2. Identify the product and the exact component
Find the product’s assembly instructions on its IKEA product page. IKEA US says they are under Product details; the US customer-service FAQ covers finding assembly documents. The UK and Germany guidance also points customers to product pages and assembly documents.

Write down the product name or model, the assembly step where the part appears, and the part number if the guide gives one. A clear photo of the relevant diagram and the item can help when you contact support. Distinguish a small fitting—such as a screw or dowel—from a panel, door, drawer or other larger component.
3. Try IKEA for a numbered hardware part
For a US purchase, IKEA says hardware identified by a six-digit number can be requested through its self-serve spare-parts service, with free shipping. That guidance does not guarantee that every part is available. If there is no six-digit number, IKEA recommends store assistance; its guidance for older items says to bring the assembly document and receipt or order confirmation. It also suggests contacting customer support if a store visit is not possible.

Procedures differ by country: IKEA UK and Germany describe six- or eight-digit part codes, so do not assume that another country’s codes or delivery terms apply where you live. Check your local IKEA site for the current process: UK guidance and Germany guidance.
4. Ask about unnumbered or larger components
For a missing panel, door, top or other component without a spare-part code, contact IKEA or visit a store with the assembly guide, product details and any purchase documentation you have. Explain honestly that you bought the item second-hand from a private seller if that is the case. The US guidance does not promise a replacement for private second-hand purchases; it notes that assistance may not be guaranteed without a receipt or when the customer is outside the 365-day return policy. Ask whether the specific part can be supplied and whether a fee applies rather than assuming it is available.

5. Know what IKEA’s As-Is policy does—and does not—cover
IKEA US describes a separate policy for goods sold through its own As-Is department. For those purchases, missing hardware such as screws or drawer slides may be ordered free of charge, subject to availability. Larger missing parts, such as doors or tops, may be supplied at the store’s discretion and may incur a fee; the guidance says As-Is sales are final. These terms apply to IKEA’s As-Is department, not automatically to a private marketplace transaction. See IKEA’s US As-Is FAQ and hardware-parts information.

If IKEA cannot provide the part, a standard screw or fitting may be replaceable, but only after you confirm its dimensions and specification against the original. A generic hardware assortment is not a safe substitute for an unidentified connector, support or structural component. Do not improvise a replacement for a load-bearing or structural part; an incorrect fit can make the furniture unstable.

The practical choice depends on the component. IKEA is the better first inquiry for numbered hardware because the US service says eligible parts can be requested free; for an unnumbered or large part, ask IKEA about availability and any fee. A third-party option is worth considering only when the exact specification is established. No universal price, availability or delivery time is established for either route.
