Resume an incomplete download or address the phone’s stated storage warning; if downloads repeatedly fail, try Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac. If the phone will not start normally after the failed update, contact Samsung service rather than attempting an unofficial reflash.
Start by identifying the update stage
Galaxy menus and button labels vary by model and software version. Look under Settings for Software update or System updates; the action may be called Download and install or Check for updates. Samsung’s guidance for update failures is at Samsung Support: Software update failed on Samsung device.
- No update is offered: check the connection, carrier and rollout timing.
- Download is incomplete: use the update notification to resume it.
- Storage warning appears: free the amount of space shown on the phone.
- Installation or restart is underway: allow the process to continue; the device may restart more than once.
- The phone will not boot normally after an update failure: contact Samsung service.
If the update is not available
Connect to Wi-Fi and check again. Some carriers require Wi-Fi for updates, and newly released software may be distributed in waves rather than appearing on every eligible device at once. Samsung suggests checking again every few hours when an update is rolling out. Carrier release timing and SIM requirements can also affect availability, particularly on carrier-branded or carrier-unlocked phones. If downloading is incomplete or keeps failing
Resume an interrupted download
If the download did not finish, tap the update notification and follow its prompt to resume. If the notification is gone, return to the software update screen in Settings and check for the available update again.

Respond to a storage warning
When the phone says there is not enough storage, remove unneeded files or apps until you have freed the amount it specifies. Samsung does not provide one storage amount that applies to every update, so use the on-screen requirement rather than a generic estimate.
Move to a computer if retries still fail
If the download repeatedly fails, avoid restarting the same unchanged download over and over. Samsung supports updating through Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac as an alternative.

Update with Samsung Smart Switch
- Install and open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB data cable. Samsung recommends using the cable supplied with the phone when available.
- Allow the computer to detect the phone. If the phone displays a USB prompt, choose Transferring files / Android Auto if requested.
- If Smart Switch offers Update, select it and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes. The device may restart during the process.

Try Samsung’s connection and computer checks before changing anything on the phone:

- Check for computer updates and restart the PC or Mac.
- Remove and reinstall Smart Switch.
- Select Transferring files / Android Auto in the phone’s USB prompt.
- Try another USB port or a different data cable, then try another computer if available.
Samsung notes that Verizon phones’ USB system-update mode is not compatible with Smart Switch. Smart Switch troubleshooting details are available from Samsung Support.
If installation appears to be taking a long time
A Galaxy device may restart several times while installing an update. During a Smart Switch update, leave the cable connected and do not use the phone until the process completes. Samsung does not specify a universal timeout for a progress screen that appears frozen, so there is no evidence-based number of minutes after which every phone should be forced off. Avoid interrupting an update based on an arbitrary timer.

If the phone will not start normally
If the phone cannot boot normally after an update failure, Samsung says it needs service to be reflashed. Contact Samsung Support or an appropriate Samsung service center. Do not install unofficial firmware or attempt consumer reflashing procedures.
