First check whether the game’s release date changed, your physical order has not shipped, or an eShop preload simply is not playable yet. Then check the order status and the seller’s latest notice. Your options depend on the country, seller, and whether you bought a digital or physical copy.
First, identify what is delayed
Check the game’s current listing and your order confirmation. A publisher changing a game’s release date is different from a retailer shipping a physical copy late. An eShop game that has downloaded but will not launch may be waiting for its release time, rather than being delayed.
- Changed game release date: Read the publisher’s announcement and the seller’s notice, then check the seller’s cancellation terms.
- Physical order not shipped: Check the retailer’s order page for a revised shipping date and instructions for canceling.
- eShop preload will not launch: Check the release date and unlock information on the game’s listing before treating it as a delay.
Keep the order confirmation and any delay notice. They help establish which date was promised and what the seller told you.
If you preordered digitally from Nintendo eShop
Nintendo of America’s support guidance says an eShop preorder can be canceled before payment is processed, at least seven days before release. Nintendo says it collects payment no sooner than seven days before release; its FAQ also says a preorder may be canceled before payment processing and preload. If payment fails, the preorder is canceled. These are Nintendo’s US support terms, not a statement of consumer rights in every country. If the normal cancellation option is unavailable, Nintendo’s support article advises contacting Nintendo Support. Check your account and the order details promptly; do not assume that a changed release date automatically resets the cancellation window.
Nintendo UK describes a voluntary cancellation option for a digital preorder exercised seven or more days before release, and says it does not affect statutory cancellation rights. If a physical Nintendo Store order is late
Nintendo of America distinguishes physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store from eShop preorders: it says physical pre-purchases are charged immediately and ship one to three business days after the game’s release. Nintendo says to contact its support team to cancel. Check the order’s current status and contact Nintendo Store if it has not shipped outside that stated window. For a physical preorder from another seller, use that retailer’s order page and current terms. Ask for a definite revised shipping date and whether you can cancel for a refund. Confirm how any refund will be issued and when the seller expects to process it before deciding whether to wait.

US online merchandise orders: what to do about a shipping delay
For most online merchandise orders in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission says the seller must ship within the promised period, or within 30 days if no shipping time was promised. If the seller cannot ship on time, it must notify you and give you the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a full refund. The FTC’s consumer guidance puts it this way: “If there’s a delay shipping your order, the seller has to tell you and give you the choice of either agreeing to the delay or canceling your order for a full refund.” FTC Consumer Advice: What To Do if You’re Billed for Things You Never Got, or You Get Unordered Products.
This guidance concerns delayed shipment of merchandise in the US. It does not determine every issue involving a publisher changing a game’s software release date, and it should not be treated as a summary of rights outside the US. If the eShop game is preloaded but won’t play
A game icon or downloaded files do not necessarily mean the game is playable before launch. Nintendo says a non-playable version can appear on the HOME Menu before release; play begins after the release-time update. Check the game’s release date in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store. Some third-party games may unlock at a different stated time, so use the current listing for that specific title. Nintendo: Error Message: “This Software Cannot Be Played Yet”.

Before choosing, compare the confirmed revised release or shipping date with your need for the game, whether payment has already been taken, and the cancellation rules for your country and seller. If you cancel, verify the refund method and expected timing. If you are considering buying elsewhere, confirm that the listing is for the exact game and Nintendo Switch 2 edition, from a seller with a confirmed availability date; a different edition or an unverified listing may not solve the problem.
