Stop using the suspected channel for sensitive discussion, contact a trusted editor or newsroom security contact through a separately assessed route, and seek qualified digital-security help before attempting invasive cleanup. The facts of an individual incident cannot be determined from a general checklist.
Start with the source’s safety and limit further exposure
- Assess immediate risk. Consider whether the source could face arrest, violence, retaliation, or other harm if the contact becomes known, and what an adversary might be capable of doing. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) advises assessing the source’s circumstances and notes that temporary relocation may need consideration in some cases. If danger seems immediate, prioritize a safe, location-appropriate human-support route over technical troubleshooting. Do not include identifying details in ordinary messages while arranging help. CPJ’s confidential-source guidance provides a global introduction, not a substitute for local advice.
- Stop discussing sensitive matters on the suspected device or channel. Use a separately assessed route to alert a trusted editor, newsroom security contact, or qualified specialist. Keep a concise timeline and any incident notices in a secure place.
- Do not reflexively wipe, reinstall, or discard a device. Ask a specialist what to do first. CPJ notes that deleted content can sometimes be recovered, and the organizations cited here do not provide one universal evidence-preservation protocol. Avoiding an impulsive cleanup preserves the opportunity for case-specific advice; it does not guarantee evidence will be retained or recovered.
Choose help based on what the incident requires
Attack analysis and active incident response are different needs. Confirm current eligibility, intake arrangements, privacy terms, and evidence-handling practices directly with any organization before sharing devices or sensitive information.
For analysis of a suspected digital attack
Reporters Without Borders’ (RSF) Digital Security Lab says journalists affected by a digital attack, or with good reason to believe they were attacked, can contact it. The lab lists analysis of devices for malware indicators, phishing attacks, and malicious account takeovers. It cautions that civil forensic methods cannot prove a device is free of malware: a negative finding does not establish that no malware is present. RSF generally cannot provide incident response, such as securing devices or recovery after an attack.
For device security or recovery
RSF points journalists who need help securing devices or recovering from attacks to Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline. Check the helpline’s current service access and eligibility before relying on it. Neither an analysis referral nor a helpline guarantees service or a particular outcome.

For broader journalist-safety and legal resources
CPJ’s Digital Safety Kit offers security resources for journalists and editors. CPJ’s U.S. journalist safety kit references the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (RCFP) and its legal hotline for U.S.-based journalists. These are routes to further assistance, not guarantees of representation or legal outcomes.
Communicate with the source only through a carefully assessed route
If both endpoints are believed safe, use an end-to-end encrypted service and verify the contact’s identity with a pre-agreed phrase or another method established in advance. CPJ names Signal, WhatsApp, and Wire as examples in its confidential-source guidance; this is not a current independent comparison or endorsement of one service over another. Consider how each service handles metadata, backups, account recovery, and usability for the source, as well as whether the endpoints themselves are safe.

Agree what information is necessary to keep and where it may be stored. CPJ recommends enabling disappearing messages where available, but that setting is not a guarantee of deletion: it does not erase recipient copies, screenshots, notification previews, cloud backups, or information already collected by an attacker.
CPJ says SMS and carrier phone calls are not encrypted and notes that telecom providers and internet service providers may collect information that identifies or locates users. For some high-risk situations, CPJ advises considering a meeting without phones. That is not universally safer; physical safety, local law, and the circumstances of the source and journalist matter.

Understand what encryption can—and cannot—protect
End-to-end encryption can protect message content in transit so the service provider does not hold a readable copy on its server. It cannot make a compromised endpoint safe. Someone with access to an unlocked or compromised phone, a linked account, or recipient-side copies may still see communications. CPJ’s Digital Safety Kit also explains that metadata such as phone numbers, timestamps, and call duration may remain exposed, while cloud backups and synced contacts can preserve information. Its guidance for journalists in exile warns that spyware on either phone can expose calls and messages even when an encrypted messaging app is used.
In practical terms, encryption helps protect content on the communication path; it does not prevent someone who can see a message on either device or account from reading or copying it. A secure app alone cannot establish that a conversation remained private.

Harden accounts and devices from a trusted device
Only make account changes from a device you have reason to consider safe. If no such device is available, consult a qualified specialist before using the suspected device to change credentials; otherwise, new passwords or recovery details could be exposed too.
- Review account activity and signed-in sessions; revoke access you do not recognize.
- Change passwords that were reused or may have been compromised. Use long, unique passwords and secure account-recovery options.
- Enable two-factor authentication. CPJ says an authenticator app can be preferable to SMS and suggests a hardware security key for people at high risk of hacking. Check that the key works with the relevant device and services, and keep a backup key.
- Update operating systems, apps, and browsers, and enable device encryption where available.
- Review cloud backups and synced contacts. CPJ warns that cloud copies may not be encrypted and that deleting a contact in one place may leave it synced elsewhere.
- Reduce source-identifying material stored on devices and accounts to what is necessary for the work.
Remote wipe is not an automatic first response. It must have been configured beforehand, only works if the device can connect, and CPJ notes that it may have legal repercussions. Treat it as a case-specific decision, not a substitute for specialist advice. See CPJ’s Digital Safety Kit for its account and device-security recommendations.

Check documents and publication materials for identifying details
Files can reveal information about a source beyond their visible text. Metadata may include dates, times, location, authoring software, or device details. CPJ recommends removing metadata before sharing or publishing sensitive files. Blurring or redacting content may not be enough: underlying material can sometimes be recovered, while screenshots, backgrounds, printed-document traces, and distinctive visual details may also identify someone. Review both the original and any derivative copy before publication, and have another editor check redactions when the stakes are high. CPJ’s confidential-source guidance discusses these exposure risks.
Get local legal advice before making consequential decisions
Do not assume source-protection laws prevent seizure or disclosure. CPJ notes that law varies by country and that newsroom policies may require sharing a source’s identity with editors; local rules may also require turning over notebooks or equipment. The RCFP’s guide to electronic communications surveillance addresses U.S. government access to journalists’ communications and related legal issues; it does not establish rules for other countries. Consult local counsel or a relevant press-freedom organization before deleting potentially relevant material, responding to a demand, or making public claims about the incident. CPJ describes its confidential-source material as a global introduction and cautions that law and employer policies vary.
