Then check whether the game update or mod change caused the problem, test the suspected mod in a reversible way, and try an earlier save made before the change. Don’t overwrite the affected slot or assume that removing a mod will repair a save.
1. Protect your saves before troubleshooting
Stop saving over the affected slot. Copy your save files to a separate location outside the active game folder or sync path. If the game relies on configuration files or a mod list to recreate your setup, copy those too. An optional second local folder, platform backup, or external drive can provide another copy; storage preserves files but cannot repair a save that is already corrupted.
Cloud-sync behavior varies by game and service, so don’t assume a cloud copy is independent or unaffected. Check how your platform handles sync conflicts before restoring, deleting, or replacing files. Folder locations and backup procedures differ by game and platform; use the publisher’s instructions rather than applying a path from another game. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC reinstall guidance, for example, tells users to rename the user-data folder and copy saved games back from a backup folder afterward.
2. Record what changed
Before disabling or removing anything, note the details that can help you identify the cause or ask for support:

- Game name and edition, platform, and installed game version or build.
- Mod name and version, mod manager, dependencies, and load order, if applicable.
- What changed most recently: a game patch, a mod update, a new mod, or a change to the load order.
- When the crash occurs, the full error text, and whether an earlier save or a new game behaves differently.
Bethesda Support advises contacting mod authors about issues with specific mods. If a mod appears responsible, send its author your game and mod versions, dependencies and load order, steps that reproduce the issue, any error or crash log, and the results of testing an earlier save or clean game. Don’t infer a cause from a log without actually examining it.
3. Check game and mod compatibility
If the trouble began after a game patch, compare your installed build with the mod’s stated requirements and update history. Check documented dependencies and load-order instructions as well. Bethesda notes that a mod may stop working properly after a game update until its creator updates it. Updating or downgrading the game is not automatically safe for a save made under a different setup, so check the game’s official guidance and the mod author’s instructions before changing versions.

4. Test the suspected mod without risking your original save
Use the game’s supported controls or your mod manager to disable the suspected mod as a diagnostic. Change one thing at a time, keep your backup, and test a separate known-good save or a new game where possible. If the game starts working without the mod, that is useful evidence about the cause, but it does not prove that a save made with the mod active is safe to continue using.
For Skyrim Special Edition, Bethesda Support’s specific advice is: “If your game is crashing after installing a Creation/Mod, uninstall it and reload to confirm that the issue is related to it.” Treat that as guidance for the stated Skyrim troubleshooting context, not as a universal rule for every game or save.

Paradox’s helpdesk documents a diagnostic launch with mods and Workshop disabled, using --disableMods --noWorkshop in its supported troubleshooting context. Don’t copy those launch options to another game; follow that game’s own mod-disable or clean-launch instructions.
5. Try a save from before the mod change
If a save made before the mod was installed or changed still loads, use it as a possible recovery point and consult the mod’s uninstall or update instructions before continuing. Keep the affected save separately in case the game or mod author has a game-specific recovery procedure.

In its Skyrim guidance, Bethesda describes selecting saves without the mod marker. That marker is Skyrim-specific, not a general feature. Bethesda also advises Skyrim players to keep unmodded saves to revert to if modded gameplay causes problems.

If saves still fail with mods disabled, consult the publisher’s support page for the exact game and platform. Follow its instructions before deleting files, reinstalling, rolling back a game version, or resuming a save. File verification or reinstalling may address damaged game files, but neither is a guarantee that a mod-affected save will be restored.

Bethesda’s clean-reinstall procedure is specific to Skyrim on PC: it recommends removing mod files, disabling third-party mod managers, preserving user data, and reinstalling if crashes continue. Bethesda warns that a save corrupted by a mod may remain unusable and require starting over. Don’t apply those folders or steps to another game.
