First identify where the transaction is stuck: a card or bank payment, a crypto provider’s purchase order, an on-chain transfer, or an exchange deposit. Check the status with the service responsible for that stage. “Pending” is a platform status, not a diagnosis, and the right next step depends on what the payment record or blockchain explorer shows.

Identify which part of the transaction is pending

A crypto purchase and a crypto transfer can both show as pending even though they involve different systems. A purchase may still be awaiting payment authorization or provider processing. A transfer may have been broadcast but not yet received enough blockchain confirmations, or an exchange may still be processing a deposit that is already confirmed on-chain.

What you see Where to check Who may be able to help
Card or bank payment, or crypto purchase order, is pending The original app’s order details and the payment provider’s status The provider processing the purchase; your bank or card issuer for a lingering hold
Outgoing crypto transfer is pending The sending wallet or exchange’s transaction details and the linked blockchain explorer The sending service, or the wallet’s supported pending-transaction controls
Crypto sent to an exchange is not credited The explorer record and the receiving exchange’s deposit status and requirements The receiving exchange, if the transaction is confirmed to the correct address and network

If a purchase or bank payment is pending

  1. Open the order where you started the purchase. Check whether it shows a provider status, a request to verify your identity, or an action required for your payment method.
  2. Identify the provider handling the order. If you started a purchase in MetaMask, the selected third-party provider executes it; MetaMask does not fulfill the purchase. Check the provider named in the order details. See MetaMask’s guide to buying crypto and its purchase FAQs.
  3. If your bank or card shows a charge but the crypto has not arrived, contact that provider. MetaMask advises contacting the selected provider about a delayed purchase. If the order failed but a card still shows a pending amount, it may be a pre-authorization hold rather than a completed charge. Kraken says it does not claim funds for failed transactions; ask your bank or card issuer about a hold that remains. See Kraken’s payment-decline FAQ.
  4. Wait for the first order’s status before placing another. The available provider guidance does not establish whether a duplicate order will be blocked or charged separately, so do not assume a second purchase is harmless.

If an on-chain send is pending

  1. Open the transaction details in the sending wallet or exchange. Use its blockchain explorer link, or search the transaction hash on an explorer for the network used to send. A link for a different network will not show the relevant transaction.
  2. Check the recipient, network, and confirmation count. Confirm that the destination address and network match your intent, then see whether the transaction appears on-chain and whether confirmations are increasing. If it does not appear, the sending service is the relevant place to check its status.
  3. Use the receiving service’s confirmation requirement. Requirements differ by asset and platform, and may change. A transaction can be visible on-chain before it meets the receiving exchange’s deposit policy. Binance notes that confirmation requirements may change; see its guide to checking blockchain transaction status.
  4. For Coinbase sends, follow Coinbase’s support guidance. Coinbase advises waiting at least 30 minutes for many pending sends before taking the next support step. If the confirmation count remains at zero, its guidance says to contact support. This is Coinbase-specific advice, not a universal transaction-time estimate. See Coinbase’s send and receive troubleshooting guide.
  5. In a self-custody wallet, check only the controls the wallet offers for that transaction. MetaMask documents speed-up or cancellation for supported pending transactions. Whether either option is available depends on the wallet, network, and transaction state; fee changes can affect whether a transaction is picked up. Do not try to cancel a transaction that is already confirmed. See MetaMask’s pending-transaction guide.

If an exchange has not credited an incoming deposit

  1. Ask the sender for the transaction hash or explorer link. Verify on the correct network that the destination address matches the deposit instructions for your exchange account.
  2. Check the exchange’s deposit status and confirmation requirement. The exchange may show an incoming transfer before it has enough confirmations for its policy. For example, Coinbase Exchange’s cited BTC deposit example requires two confirmations; that example is specific to BTC on that service, not a general threshold. See Coinbase Exchange’s pending-deposit explanation.
  3. Look for an account request or alert. A service may require identity or account information before completing a receive. Coinbase says some receive issues can involve account tasks, and the details depend on the account.
  4. Contact the receiving exchange if the transaction is confirmed to the right address and network but remains uncredited. Use the official in-app support route. Do not follow unsolicited messages, links, or phone numbers offering help.

Why a purchase or transfer can remain pending

  • Payment authorization or provider processing: a purchase can be waiting on a payment decision or provider action before the provider executes the on-chain transfer.
  • Blockchain confirmations: a receiving service may wait for its required number of confirmations before crediting a deposit.
  • Service synchronization: Coinbase says its nodes can temporarily lose sync with the wider network, which can delay a displayed status.
  • Transaction fee and network conditions: MetaMask explains that the fee bid can affect how quickly a transaction is processed. That does not mean a fee increase is always available or appropriate.
  • Account review or requested information: a platform may need identity or account tasks completed before it processes a receive.

When a pending transaction becomes final

Until a transaction is confirmed, the actions available depend on the wallet, network, and service. Once a blockchain transfer is successfully confirmed, it cannot be reversed by a wallet or exchange. MetaMask states, “Confirmed transactions cannot be reversed.” If a confirmed transfer went to the wrong recipient, MetaMask identifies contacting the receiver and asking them to send the tokens back in a new transaction as the recovery option; there is no guaranteed way to recover them. See MetaMask’s transaction guide.

Never share a seed phrase or private key with anyone claiming they can unstick a transfer. Use the official support route for the wallet, provider, or exchange involved.
