If a crypto deposit or withdrawal is marked frozen, held, locked, or pending, first find out what kind of restriction it is. A timed security hold, missing payment reference, account check, balance constraint, service issue, and legal restriction can look similar but need different responses. Save the exact status message, check your exchange’s official instructions, and do not send more crypto to anyone promising to unlock your funds.
Why is my crypto withdrawal on hold, or my deposit locked?
“On hold” is a status, not a diagnosis. The exchange’s exact message, the transaction details, and the account’s official help instructions are more useful than repeatedly retrying the transfer. Policies can vary by exchange entity, payment method, asset, product, and jurisdiction.
| Possible cause | What to look for | Who or what may control the next step |
|---|---|---|
| Time-based security hold | A stated waiting period tied to a payment method, password change, or newly added address | The exchange’s timer; support may not be able to shorten it |
| Payment or account condition | A missing deposit reference, name mismatch, funding limit, or bank request | The exchange, bank, or payment provider; the notice should identify what information or condition is missing |
| Balance or transaction constraint | Funds committed to an open order, margin collateral, staking or rewards, a negative balance, or a currency not held in the account | Your account or product settings, subject to the exchange’s rules |
| Identity, origin, or regional information check | A request for identity, sender, source, address ownership, or beneficiary details | The exchange’s verification or compliance process, with requirements that may depend on location |
| Service interruption | An exchange status notice or a network-specific delay | The exchange or blockchain network; check the official status page before taking another action |
| Formal legal or sanctions restriction | A notice referring to a court, competent authority, or sanctions requirement | The relevant authority and the exchange’s legal obligations; ordinary support may be limited |
As a platform-specific example, Kraken’s guidance updated October 5, 2026 says certain ACH purchases, PayPal, debit or credit card, and digital-wallet purchases can trigger a 72-hour withdrawal hold; certain ACH Plaid cash deposits can be held from withdrawal for seven days; and changing a password can hold withdrawals to newly added addresses for up to 24 hours. Kraken says these holds can apply to crypto or fiat withdrawals. Its separate withdrawal guidance, updated March 16, 2026, says funds subject to its time-based holds may remain available for trading, while support cannot bypass the hold. These are Kraken-specific examples, not general deadlines.
What should I check before contacting support?
Preserve the transaction details
- Save a screenshot of the exact status or error message, including the date and time. Keep the original notice or email if one was sent.
- Record the asset, amount, deposit or withdrawal date, network, transaction hash or exchange transaction ID, and the relevant sending or receiving address. For a bank or payment transfer, save the receipt and reference number.
- For an on-chain deposit, look up the transaction hash using a reputable block explorer. Compare its status, receiving address, asset, and network with the exchange’s deposit instructions. A blockchain confirmation does not by itself prove the exchange has credited the deposit.
- Keep any existing support case number and copies of the exchange’s replies. This is a practical preparation list, not a promise that every platform will require every item.
Never include a password, seed phrase, private key, or one-time verification code in a support ticket, screenshot, or message to another person.

Check account and platform notices
- Open the exchange’s official app or type its known website address yourself; check its help center and service-status page.
- Look for a timer or a stated review period, and check whether any identity, account, sender, origin-address, or ownership prompt remains incomplete.
- Check whether a funding limit applies, the exchange and bank account names match, or your balance is committed to an open or pending order, margin position, staking or rewards product, or negative balance.
- Confirm that the selected withdrawal currency and network match the destination’s requirements. Do not retry with a different network or address just to see whether it works.
What should I do next?
- Match the message to the likely cause. Use the exchange’s own help article for the exact status, payment method, and product. A timer, missing reference, verification request, and unavailable balance call for different fixes.
- Complete only a step requested in the official account interface. If the platform asks for identity, bank, sender, originating-wallet, ownership, or beneficiary information, submit truthful, legible records through its secure app or website. Do not fabricate source-of-funds documents, claim ownership you cannot substantiate, or use another account to evade a review.
- Open or update one official support case. Give a concise timeline, state what you checked, and include the relevant transaction identifiers and requested evidence. Ask which status category applies, whether a user action is outstanding, and whether a published time window or manual review applies. Save the response and case number.
- Wait only when the platform identifies a genuine time window. Some holds expire automatically; others may require manual review. Do not assume that silence means a timer is running, or that support can override a documented hold.
- Escalate through the applicable complaint route if unresolved. Find the exchange’s complaint procedure and identify the legal entity serving your account and the regulator or authority relevant to your location. Keep a dated chronology of messages, submissions, and promised follow-ups.
When can verification or regional rules hold a transaction?
An exchange may ask for information about identity, account ownership, where funds came from, or who controls a sending or receiving address. Do not treat a request as a reason to route around the platform’s controls; use the official submission path and answer accurately.
The examples below have limited geographic and product scope. OKX’s Singapore guidance describes risk controls that can restrict withdrawals or P2P sales for a period, as well as regional Travel Rule information requirements that may include a sender’s legal name and whether the source is an exchange or private wallet. Coinbase Exchange’s Singapore guidance describes address whitelisting and wallet-ownership attestation for outgoing transfers, and origin-address information and ownership attestation for incoming deposits; it says missing origin information can put a deposit on hold, with information supplied through the deposit interface. These are not universal requirements for all exchanges or locations.

Revolut’s UK cryptocurrency terms provide another jurisdiction-specific example: they say regulatory obligations may require the collection and verification of information or a risk assessment before a deposit is made available, and describe circumstances in which a transaction may be frozen, blocked, or returned. The terms also warn that accepted crypto transfers cannot be cancelled. The applicable terms and process depend on the service and location.
What if the restriction is legal or sanctions-related?
Coinbase says it may freeze funds when required to comply with a court or other competent-authority order, or sanctions law, and that it will contact affected customers where permitted by law. A formal restriction is different from a routine processing delay: repeated transfer attempts or a third party claiming they can release the funds may not change it.

Preserve any notice and follow the official contact instructions. If you receive a formal order or need advice about your rights in a particular jurisdiction, consult a qualified legal professional there. A support ticket or legal consultation cannot be promised to release assets.
How long does an exchange withdrawal hold last?
There is no single duration that applies across exchanges or hold types. Use a timeframe only if the platform states it for your specific payment method, account event, or transaction. Kraken’s published periods above illustrate why the method matters; they do not predict how long another platform’s review will take. A legal or sanctions restriction may not have an ordinary customer-facing countdown.

The CFPB’s November 2022 complaint bulletin records consumers reporting identity or account-ownership verification problems and account lockouts; some said restrictions lasted weeks or months. These are reported complaint experiences, not representative measurements of typical hold duration, adjudicated findings, or proof that a particular restriction is improper.

Reach support through the exchange app or website you opened independently, not through a phone number, link, social-media account, or contact supplied by a stranger. A person who promises an unlock in exchange for an extra crypto payment, a fee, secrecy, remote access, or a transfer to an address they provide may be trying to steal from you.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission warns that crypto transfers to an address cannot be reversed and advises consumers to verify unusual payment instructions through the real organization. If you believe you were targeted or suffered internet-enabled fraud, the CFTC identifies CFTC.gov/complaint and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) as reporting channels. Their suitability depends on the issue and your location; they are not universal routes for every account complaint.
When should I make a formal complaint?
Consider the exchange’s formal complaint process when support has not addressed the issue, required information has been submitted, or the stated review period has passed without a useful explanation. Include a concise chronology, transaction references, case numbers, copies of notices, and the specific outcome you are requesting. Use the regulator or dispute channel applicable to the exchange entity and your jurisdiction; the right route differs across countries and services.
For a significant disputed amount, a formal legal notice, or a sanctions-related restriction, get jurisdiction-specific professional advice rather than paying an unsolicited “recovery” service.
