Before selling or giving away a Samsung Galaxy, back up and verify the data you want to keep, remove your Google and Samsung accounts and other security locks, perform a full factory data reset, and take out any physical SIM or microSD card. Leave the phone at its initial setup screen so the next owner can configure it with their own account.
Choose the handoff route first
A direct sale or gift and a mailed trade-in share the same privacy steps, but a trade-in can have separate packaging and eligibility rules. Samsung’s US trade-in FAQ says not to send SIM cards, memory cards, or accessories you want returned; requirements may differ by country and offer. Back up what you want to keep, then verify it
A factory reset erases data on the phone, so make and check a backup before resetting. Choose a method that fits your data and where it needs to go. Samsung’s Smart Switch PC instructions describe connecting the phone to a computer with a USB cable, allowing access on the phone, and choosing Backup. Samsung says Smart Switch does not transfer hidden files or Secure Folder files; inspect those separately and use the relevant app’s migration or export steps where needed. Open the backup destination and confirm important files are present before continuing.

Remove accounts and security locks
Sign out of or remove the Google and Samsung accounts from the phone before resetting, and make sure you know the account credentials. Samsung’s trade-in guidance warns that remaining accounts or software locks can prevent acceptance. Google Factory Reset Protection may also require the previous owner’s credentials after a reset, and a Samsung reset flow may ask for the Samsung account password. Perform a full factory data reset
Use Factory data reset, not an option that resets only selected settings. Samsung’s US guidance distinguishes these: a settings reset does not remove personal data. On supported Galaxy software, the usual route is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset; review the screen and confirm the reset. A Samsung account password may be requested. Menu names and steps can vary by model, software version, and provider, so consult instructions for the exact phone if the route differs. Remove physical cards and handle eSIM separately
- Physical SIM: Remove it before handing over or shipping the device.
- microSD card: Remove it if present. Samsung says a factory reset does not erase data stored on an SD card. Keep it or erase it separately if you intend to give it away.
- eSIM and service: Check with your carrier and follow the phone’s transfer or removal prompts. The right sequence depends on the carrier and device, so do not assume a reset alone transfers or cancels service.

Finish the handoff without exposing your accounts
After the reset, let the phone start at the initial setup screen and do not sign back in. Give the recipient the phone, not your account passwords. For a mailed trade-in, follow the offer’s current regional instructions and include only the items it requests; Samsung US says accessories or cards sent with a trade-in may not be returned. For a personal handoff, Samsung Germany suggests passing along relevant accessories and an available invoice, but those are optional suggestions rather than universal requirements.
