Save the exchange’s event and order records, compare them with the applicable margin rules, and ask support to explain the trigger and execution before pursuing a complaint. The right escalation route depends on the product, the exchange’s legal entity, and your jurisdiction.
Confirm what closed the position
A lower balance or a position that disappeared while you were away is not, by itself, proof of forced liquidation. Check the exchange’s position history, order history, and any dedicated liquidation or risk-event record. OKX likewise cautions that a position closing while a trader is away does not establish that liquidation caused it; when the records are unclear, it advises contacting support with the order ID and time (OKX forced-liquidation FAQ).
Look for other possible causes in the same time window:
- A stop-loss or take-profit order executed.
- You or another authorized user placed a closing or reverse order.
- A trading bot acted on the account.
- A contract expired or settled.
- A loan was repaid or collateral was used to cover a liability.
- The exchange reduced only part of the position.
Use the venue’s own classification and transaction records rather than inferring the cause from a chart or balance change.

Preserve the records before investigating further
Save screenshots or exports of the event and the surrounding account activity. Record the instrument and contract, position mode, order or liquidation ID, timestamp and time zone, quantity closed, displayed trigger price, relevant mark, index, or last price, fill price, fees, remaining balance, margin mode, and any exchange notifications. Export account statements and order and trade data if the platform allows it. Request any missing event records from the exchange and retain the support case number and replies.
For regulated U.S. futures commission merchants, the CFTC describes customer confirmations, monthly statements, account ledgers, and transaction records (CFTC FCM recordkeeping guidance). Those requirements should not be assumed to cover every offshore venue or an unregulated spot platform.

Compare the event with the venue’s rules
Read the current margin and contract terms for the specific product, account mode, jurisdiction, and contracting exchange entity. A liquidation price shown in an interface may be an estimate or trigger under assumptions, not the actual execution price. For example, Crypto.com Exchange’s help article, dated February 8, 2024, says its estimated liquidation price assumes other portfolio instrument prices remain unchanged and describes progressive liquidation when margin balance falls below maintenance margin (Crypto.com Exchange margin and forced-liquidation explanation).
Check which reference price the rules use. If your chart displays last-traded price, compare it with the relevant mark or index price and the prices recorded in the liquidation and order history. A difference between the chart and the exchange’s trigger value needs explanation, but it does not alone establish that the venue acted incorrectly.

Rules are not interchangeable across products or exchanges. These official pages illustrate different procedures:
- Crypto.com Prime margin documentation describes liquidation when its Margin Wallet falls below Maintenance Balance, progressive auto-liquidation, restrictions, and a stated fee for that product.
- Coinbase Global Exchange margin documentation describes initial, maintenance, and close-out margin, partial liquidation below maintenance margin, and further risk-waterfall steps at lower thresholds.
- Kraken’s margin-level guidance, last updated October 1, 2026, gives an approximate margin-call threshold and says its automated liquidation process cannot be stopped once started.
These are examples for the named platforms and products, not universal rules. Confirm that a page applies to your product and the legal entity named in your account agreement.

Ask support for a specific explanation
Use the exchange’s official support channel and include the order or liquidation ID and event time. Ask for the information needed to reconstruct the decision:
- Which trigger metric, reference price, and threshold applied?
- Was the close partial or full, and what sequence of risk actions occurred?
- What were the execution prices, quantities, and fees?
- Did other open orders, positions, or collateral affect the calculation?
- Which contract term or margin rule governed the event, and where is it published?
Keep the exchange’s answer with your exported records. If it does not address the event details, follow up with the case number and identify the unanswered question. Do not assume a disputed liquidation will automatically be reversed or reimbursed; the next step is to establish the recorded trigger, execution, and applicable rule.

Escalate only through a route that covers your case
Identify the legal entity that provided the service and whether the transaction was spot, a loan, a future, a perpetual, or another derivative. A support complaint to an exchange and a regulator’s formal complaint process are different routes.
Covered crypto-asset service providers in the EU
MiCA Article 71 requires covered crypto-asset service providers to maintain and publish complaint procedures, permit customers to file complaints free of charge, inform them of that option, and make a complaint template available (Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, Article 71). Whether a provider and service are covered, and which competent authority or remedy applies, depends on the specific case.
U.S. futures-related complaints and tips
The CFTC Reparations Program is for complaints against futures industry professionals registered with the CFTC at the time of the alleged wrongdoing or when the complaint is filed; it is not a general appeal process for every crypto exchange or spot transaction. Check the program’s eligibility and filing instructions before using it (CFTC Reparations Program). Separately, the CFTC accepts tips and complaints about suspected Commodity Exchange Act violations (CFTC complaint and tip information). Its customer advisory also discusses virtual-currency risks and reporting suspected fraud (CFTC virtual-currency customer advisory).
Keep the investigation focused
When comparing a liquidation explanation with the account record, check the closure classification, trigger price type and value, margin mode and collateral scope, partial-versus-full close sequence, execution prices and fees, timestamps, and the contract clause the exchange cites. Those details can distinguish a liquidation from another closure and show where an explanation remains incomplete.

Preserve complete transaction exports if you later need tax guidance. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction, asset or instrument, and surrounding transactions; a liquidation alone does not establish the tax result.
