Before buying a satellite internet kit, check service at the exact address, confirm the antenna can get the required sky view, and compare the full service cost—not just the equipment price. Then match each available plan’s speed, latency, data rules, and installation terms to how the household will use it.

Will satellite internet work at your address?

Availability and plan options depend on location. Enter the precise service address in each provider’s order flow before choosing a kit or relying on an advertised price. Hughesnet says plans vary by geographic location and requires a clear view of the southern sky for service. See its service FAQ.

Also assess the property itself: trees, buildings, rooflines, and other obstructions may limit where an antenna can be placed. A provider’s address check does not by itself confirm that a suitable mounting position exists, so ask how the installation will be assessed before ordering.

What does the kit include—and will it work with the plan?

“Satellite internet kit” does not describe one universal set of equipment. Starlink defines its Starlink Kit as the user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount in its specifications. Hughesnet describes a dish mounted on or near the property and an indoor modem; its plans include built-in Wi-Fi. Hughesnet says the dish does not always have to go on the roof, and the installer determines a suitable location in its buyer’s guide.

  • Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
  • Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs

  • Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky

Before purchasing equipment separately or through a marketplace, verify that its generation, region, and plan are compatible and that the seller is authorized. Do not assume a generic mount or cable will fit: compatibility depends on the exact kit and installation location.

How much will service cost altogether?

Compare the total cost over the period you expect to keep the service. A low equipment price can be offset by monthly charges, installation, or a commitment that is expensive to leave. Use the address-specific offer and broadband label for each provider; advertised terms can change, and a general webpage may not show the terms that apply to your home.

Cost or term What to verify
Hardware Purchase price or equipment lease, and whether the kit is included with the offer.
Monthly service Price during any promotion, the price afterward, and which plan features are included.
Installation and activation Whether professional installation is required, what standard installation covers, and any activation or extra-work charges.
Taxes and surcharges Which additional charges apply to the address-specific offer.
Commitment and cancellation Minimum term, equipment-return rules, and any early-cancellation charge.

Viasat says its installation fee varies by location and credit status, and that service, equipment lease, and taxes apply. Its broadband label is a useful place to check plan disclosures, but the actual offer still depends on the service address.

Are the speeds and latency suitable for your household?

Compare download speed, upload speed, and latency against the activities that matter. Download capacity affects activities such as streaming; upload and latency can be particularly noticeable in video calls, online games, and other interactive tasks. A speed figure is not a promise of the same result at every moment.

Starlink publishes typical ranges of 25–220 Mbps download, 5–20 Mbps upload, and 25–60 ms land latency, with higher latency in certain remote locations. These are the provider’s stated typical figures, not independent test results or a guarantee; Starlink says actual performance varies by location, time of day, and plan priority in its specifications.

Hughesnet lists residential speeds up to 100 Mbps on its Elite plan and describes Fusion as combining satellite and wireless technologies for lower latency in select areas. Availability varies by location, and these are provider plan claims rather than independent measurements. Check the current plan details for the address before treating a speed or feature as available to you.

What happens when you use a lot of data?

“Unlimited” service does not necessarily mean identical performance regardless of usage or network congestion. Look for the amount of priority or high-speed data, what happens after that amount is used, and whether traffic may be slowed or deprioritized when the network is busy.

  • Hughesnet: Its plans distinguish monthly Priority Data from Standard Data; after Priority Data is used, speeds may be slower during busy periods. Hughesnet also warns that rapid-response gaming and heavy streaming can use priority data quickly. See its buyer’s guide.
  • Viasat: Some plans may deprioritize or slow service after usage thresholds. Check the exact plan’s broadband label and terms rather than assuming all plans handle data the same way. See the Viasat broadband label.

For a household with frequent streaming or many connected devices, estimate typical monthly use and compare it with the plan’s priority-data rules. For calls or gaming, also consider latency and congestion behavior, not just the download-speed headline.

Can the antenna be installed where it needs to go?

Before ordering, consider whether the property offers an unobstructed sky view and a stable mounting location, how the cable can enter the building, and whether the proposed route or mounting point creates complications. Confirm who decides the final placement and whether the installer handles the work you need.

Hughesnet says standard residential installation typically takes 2–3 hours and that the customer must be onsite. Those are Hughesnet’s stated typical requirements; confirm them, along with what standard installation includes and any extra charges, for your own appointment in its plan information.

How to compare offers before placing an order

  1. Check the exact address. Confirm that the provider offers service and the plan you want at the property.
  2. Check the installation location. Identify likely obstructions, a stable mounting option, and a practical cable route; ask how the installer confirms placement.
  3. Read the plan disclosure. Compare download, upload, latency, data-priority rules, and congestion handling for the specific offer.
  4. Calculate the full cost. Include hardware purchase or lease, monthly price after promotions, installation, activation, taxes, surcharges, minimum term, and cancellation charges.
  5. Confirm kit compatibility and logistics. Verify the current hardware generation, plan compatibility, included components, installation scope, and whether someone must be onsite.

Broadband labels can help make plan terms easier to compare. Hughesnet states that, as of April 10, 2024, the FCC requires internet service providers to provide broadband labels for home internet plans; check the provider’s current label and address-specific order terms rather than relying on an older offer.
