Open the phone’s camera app and test every camera view it offers. Take photos in bright and dim light, tap to focus on subjects at different distances, inspect the saved images, and record and play back a short video with sound. Clean the camera glass and repeat any check that looks wrong. This can reveal visible problems, but a quick inspection cannot certify the camera or rule out hidden or intermittent faults.
1. Inspect the camera glass and remove obstructions
Before judging image quality, check the exterior camera area for cracks, scratches, dirt, condensation, or anything covering the lens, including a case or lens protector. Remove coverings that may obstruct the camera, then gently wipe the glass with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Google notes that dirt or an obstruction can cause blur, halos, lines, and color distortion (Google Pixel Camera Help).
A cloth can remove surface dirt; it cannot repair cracked glass or resolve internal dust, condensation, or a faulty camera.
2. Test every camera view in the camera app
Use the phone’s normal camera app and switch among the main, ultra-wide, telephoto, and front-camera views if the phone offers them. Do not assume that all rear cameras work alike. Apple recommends checking the telephoto and ultra-wide cameras on iPhone models that have them, and Swappa’s used-phone checklist also calls for trying the available lenses and front camera (Apple Support; Swappa).

Take at least one photo with each view. A browser-based camera preview may not expose every physical camera, so it is a poor substitute for the phone’s own app when checking the full set of views.
3. Check focus and image detail
Photograph a detailed subject first at a nearby distance and then farther away. Tap the subject on screen to focus, take the picture, and inspect the saved image rather than relying only on the live preview. Look for sharp detail, haze, fixed dark marks, or focus that will not settle. Apple’s guidance for inspecting a pre-owned iPhone similarly recommends taking pictures in both low and bright light and tapping the area to focus (Apple Support).

If an image looks soft, remove any obstruction, clean the exterior glass, and repeat the shot. Google’s troubleshooting steps include cleaning and refocusing, so a single blurry image does not establish that a camera module is faulty (Google Pixel Camera Help).
4. Compare lighting and exposure
Take photos in bright and dim settings. Include a scene with both bright and shaded areas so you can see whether useful detail remains in highlights and shadows. If possible, photograph a person facing toward the light and then with the light behind them. Judge the saved pictures, not a single attractive showroom shot. Apple recommends checking in both bright and low light; OPPO also recommends comparing photos of the same person at different distances and looking at features such as eyes, hair, texture, and subject edges (Apple Support; OPPO).

5. Compare framing and portraits
Try the standard view, a wider view, and optical telephoto if available. For portraits, inspect facial detail, color, exposure, and how cleanly the subject’s edges are rendered. Background blur alone is not a reliable measure of portrait quality. OPPO’s guidance suggests photographing the same person at different distances and checking fine details such as eyes, hair, and texture (OPPO).
6. Record a short video and check its sound
Record a brief clip while holding and moving the phone naturally, then play it back. Listen for clear sound and watch for interruptions or visible instability. These observations can flag a problem, but there is no universal informal pass threshold for stabilization; a visible issue does not by itself identify its cause. Apple and Swappa both recommend recording and reviewing video as part of a used-phone inspection (Apple Support; Swappa).

7. Run an additional check where one is available
Samsung phones
On supported Samsung phones, Samsung’s support instructions give this route: Samsung Members → Support → Phone diagnostics → Camera test. Menu names and diagnostic availability can vary by device and region. The Samsung support page was last updated April 15, 2026 (Samsung Support).
Pre-owned iPhones
On an iPhone, check Settings → General → About for Parts and Service History when that section is available. Apple includes this as part of its pre-owned iPhone inspection guidance (Apple Support).

How to compare two phones fairly
Use the same subject and similar lighting on both phones, and keep camera settings at their ordinary defaults for a typical-use comparison. Test the available lenses and front cameras, near and distant focus, bright and dim scenes, a high-contrast scene, portraits, and short video playback. A comparison across landscapes, indoor and outdoor scenes, portraits, and selfies in day and night conditions is also used in Tom’s Guide’s camera-phone methodology; it is a practical comparison, not a laboratory score (Tom’s Guide).
What a quick camera check cannot tell you
A working preview or one clear photo does not prove that every camera function is healthy. A short inspection cannot certify the phone, establish future reliability, or rule out faults that appear only intermittently. A browser preview may also miss physical camera views and cannot automatically verify focus, clarity, stabilization, spots, or distortion.
If blur, a mark, or instability remains after you remove coverings and clean the glass, treat it as an unresolved warning. Ask for more time to inspect the phone or for a qualified evaluation before buying. A visible symptom is not a confirmed diagnosis, and no authoritative prevalence rate for camera defects or standardized pass rate for this kind of informal test is established by the cited guidance.
