A loud fan or warm case does not automatically mean a mini PC is failing. Fans speed up as internal temperatures rise, often during demanding work. Start by checking when the noise occurs, what is using the CPU, and whether the vents have clear airflow. If the fan stays loud at idle or the computer throttles, freezes, or shuts down during light use, investigate further and contact support if the problem persists.
First, identify when the fan gets loud
Note whether the fan ramps up at startup, during a particular app, while installing updates, or during sustained gaming, rendering, or other heavy work. See whether it settles after the task ends. Fan noise that tracks demanding work can be normal; noise that continues at idle or symptoms that begin within minutes of light use deserve closer attention. A warm case alone is not proof of a fault.
Fan speed responds to internal temperature. ASUS says the fan helps circulate air and maintain a stable operating temperature, and its current guidance applies to Mini PCs. Dell likewise explains that fan speed and noise can rise during heavy workloads as internal temperatures change. These behaviors are not, by themselves, evidence of a defect.
Check for software using CPU or memory
While the fan is loud, open your operating system’s process manager—Task Manager in Windows—and inspect CPU and memory usage. Look for a demanding app, a long-running update, or an unexpected process. If a process is consuming resources, investigate why before changing fan settings or buying cooling accessories. Heavy CPU or GPU work can raise temperatures and fan speed.

- High Quality: The double ball bearing has a service life of 65,000 hours, and the 7 blades generate strong airflow to keep the cabinet cool.
- Three Speeds: Silent fan features a multi-speed controller to set the fan’s speed to optimal noise and airflow levels. Low gear (L), middle gear (M) and high gear (H), the noise is only 21dB in low gear.
- Full Protection: Iron grill on both sides can protect your hands or prevent damage to the power cord during operation.
- Convenient USB Fan: The USB plug can supply power to the fan through the USB port on the back of popular audio-visual electronic equipment and game consoles.
- Dimension: 3.64” X 3.64” X 1.81”. Shockproof foot pads can make the fan lay flat or upright.
Make sure the mini PC can breathe
- Place the computer on a firm, flat surface.
- Keep intake and exhaust openings uncovered, with space around them; do not press the unit against a wall or bury it in an enclosed, cluttered space.
- Check visible vents for dust, hair, or debris.
Blocked airflow can make heat harder to move out of the case. If the mini PC is in a tight cabinet or surrounded by clutter, try it in a more open location and observe whether its behavior changes under the same workload.
Clean conservatively and follow the model’s instructions
- Shut down the mini PC and unplug it before cleaning.
- Check the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. For accessible openings, ASUS recommends canned compressed air held at a distance; do not invert the can while using it.
- Do not blast the unit with a high-pressure air compressor, which can damage fan blades. If dust has built up inside, seek manufacturer service rather than forcing powerful air through the machine.
Do not assume that every mini PC should be opened for cleaning. Case design, warranty terms, and service procedures vary. Avoid improvised methods, such as inserting tools into the fan, or treating thermal-paste replacement as a routine first step.

Check temperature and fan operation with supported tools
If your manufacturer provides a monitoring utility or diagnostic, use it to inspect temperature and fan operation. Some systems also provide readings or controls in BIOS. ASUS NUC guidance, for example, describes checking temperature in BIOS and fan RPM, but those steps and available cooling controls are specific to that product family—not a universal BIOS path for every mini PC.
Do not judge a reported processor temperature against one universal cutoff: safe limits and readings depend on the processor and system. Keep any fan or cooling changes model-specific and reversible. A quieter profile can affect temperatures or performance; compare the system under the same workload and restore defaults if behavior worsens.

Know when to contact support
Use the diagnostic procedure for your exact model and contact its manufacturer or a qualified repair provider if the issue remains unresolved, especially if any of these occur:
- The fan does not spin when the system’s readings or diagnostics indicate it should.
- A manufacturer diagnostic fails, or the fan makes grinding or rattling noises.
- The system throttles during light work, freezes, or shuts down unexpectedly.
- Overheating symptoms continue after you have checked workload and airflow.
Thermal throttling can protect a processor from excessive heat during sustained work, but throttling that starts quickly during light use is more concerning. Intel’s detailed troubleshooting guidance is scoped to DIY systems using Intel boxed processors; it advises users of OEM systems to contact the computer maker. For a mini PC, follow the system manufacturer’s guidance rather than applying desktop-specific hardware steps.

How to interpret what you observe
| Observation | What it may indicate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Fan gets louder during sustained demanding work, then settles afterward | A normal response to increased internal temperature | Check for clear airflow and confirm the noise is tied to the workload. |
| Fan stays loud while the system is idle | Persistent software load, restricted airflow, or a system-specific cooling issue | Check process usage and vents; then use supported monitoring or diagnostics. |
| Throttling, freezing, or shutdown during light use | A symptom that warrants further diagnosis | Run the model’s diagnostic procedure and contact support if it persists. |
| Fan does not spin when expected, diagnostics fail, or noise is grinding or rattling | Possible fan or other hardware trouble | Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. |
