Before sending cryptocurrency to a newly licensed provider, verify its current authorization in the regulator’s official register, confirm that the permission covers the service you intend to use, and match the provider’s legal identity and official channels. Then check the exact asset, network, destination address, and transaction terms. A new licence is not a guarantee against loss, and an approval that is conditional—or limited to other activities—may not permit the provider to serve you.
1. Find the regulator that applies to you
Licensing depends on the provider’s jurisdiction, the customers it serves, and the service it offers. A provider’s authorization in one country or market does not automatically let it serve customers elsewhere. Start with the financial or virtual-asset regulator relevant to your location and the transaction you plan to make. The examples below illustrate different systems; they are not a global licensing map.
2. Verify the provider in the official register
Search the regulator’s own current register independently rather than relying on a badge, announcement, or licensing claim on the provider’s website. Match the exact legal entity—not just a familiar trading name—and check its current status. Depending on the jurisdiction, a register may distinguish a full authorization from registration, conditional or in-principle approval, suspension, or no listing.
Read the regulator’s definitions carefully: these status labels are not interchangeable. For example, the UK Financial Conduct Authority advises consumers to search the firm in its Financial Services Register, check permitted activities, and compare contact details. It says a firm absent from the register is unlikely to have permission to offer crypto products.

3. Confirm that permission covers your transaction
A listed provider may be authorized for only particular activities. Check that its permission covers the service you are actually using—such as exchange, brokerage, custody, or transfers—not merely a related business activity. Do not assume that authorization to trade also covers holding or transferring assets.
Several regulators make this distinction explicit:
- Dubai, excluding the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC): The Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) register displays licensed activities and may also list applicants with In-Principle Approval (IPA). VARA says an IPA applicant cannot start operations, conduct virtual-asset activities, or service clients until it obtains a full VASP licence. Check the exact entity and activity in VARA’s public register; its remit does not include the DIFC.
- Australia: AUSTRAC’s public VASP register covers registration for designated services including exchange, safekeeping, and accepting instructions to transfer virtual assets. AUSTRAC says covered businesses must register before offering those services in Australia.
- Pakistan: The Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (PVARA) says its licensing guidance includes an up-to-date public register and requires licensees to publish their legal name, registered office, contact details, licence number, and authorized categories or services. A licence covers only the categories it expressly specifies. The page describes regulations notified on 21 August 2026; that context applies to Pakistan, not other jurisdictions.
- European Union: The European Supervisory Authorities advise consumers to check that a crypto-asset service provider is authorized in the EU. Their guidance says MiCA has applied to certain crypto-assets since December 2024 and warns that legal protection may be limited depending on the asset and service. See the ESAs’ consumer guidance.
- Indonesia: OJK’s 19 December 2025 whitelist release recommends using listed providers and official channels. Its advice includes checking that the entity, app, and website match and avoiding unofficial links, misspelled or lookalike domains, and unclear social-media or group-chat promotions. See OJK’s whitelist notice.
4. Make sure the app, website, and contacts are genuine
A valid register entry does not by itself prove that a particular website, app, message, or social account belongs to the listed provider. Compare the legal entity, app name, domain, and contact details with information published by the regulator. Type the regulator’s address yourself or locate it independently; do not use a link from a message or promotion to verify a claim. The FCA also advises checking that contact details supplied by a firm match the register. If you find a mismatch, stop and seek clarification using independently verified contact details.

5. Check the exact transfer instructions
Transfer details vary by provider and asset. In the authenticated account, confirm every item below against both the provider’s current instructions and the sending wallet’s supported options:
- The exact cryptocurrency or token.
- The blockchain or network selected for the deposit.
- The complete destination address.
- Any required memo, tag, or other identifier.
- The provider’s current minimum, fees, and relevant limits.
- When the deposit is credited and any conditions that apply to withdrawals.
The asset and network must match what the destination supports. A correct-looking address alone is not enough if the wrong network is selected or a required memo or tag is missing. There is no universal minimum, fee, confirmation time, or test-transfer amount established for all providers and assets. Follow the provider’s specific instructions; do not assume that a small test transfer guarantees a larger one will be safe or recoverable.

6. Understand custody and what recourse exists
Before depositing, find out who controls the private keys, how client assets are held, what the provider says happens during an outage or insolvency, how complaints are handled, and what withdrawal restrictions apply. Authorization does not make a crypto-asset low risk, guarantee that a transaction will succeed, or promise reimbursement. Consumer protection depends on the jurisdiction, asset, and service. The ESAs also recommend securing wallets used to store crypto-assets, without endorsing a particular wallet type or brand.
7. Stop when details conflict
Do not send funds while any important detail remains inconsistent or unclear. Pause if the regulator’s register, legal entity, app, website, contact information, authorized activity, or deposit instructions do not agree. Ask the provider for clarification through independently verified channels and, where needed, confirm the issue with the relevant regulator before proceeding.

Recheck immediately before sending
Regulator entries and provider terms can change. Check the relevant register, supported asset and network, and transaction instructions again immediately before initiating the transfer. A provider being newly licensed is a reason to verify precisely what has been authorized—not a substitute for that verification.
