Before trading in your phone, verify the exact offer’s eligibility rules, calculate the value of its credits over the full term, and check what could stop those credits. Then prepare the old phone carefully and keep proof of its condition and delivery. Carrier promotions are conditional offers, not guaranteed discounts: the plan, line, device, return deadline, and your account choices can all affect the final value.
1. Confirm the exact promotion and your eligibility
Save or screenshot the terms shown for your account at checkout. Check the eligible new phone, qualifying plan, whether the offer requires a new line or an upgrade, account standing, trade-in model and storage configuration, accepted condition, and any restrictions on a device that still has an installment balance.
Ask whether the old phone must have been active on the carrier’s network or account for a minimum period. For example, Verizon says certain promotions for existing customers require 60 consecutive days of account activity; its current FAQ also says new Verizon customers may trade in a device from another carrier. These are offer-specific rules, not universal requirements. Verizon device deals and promos FAQs and Verizon trade-in terms describe the relevant conditions.
Read “any condition” narrowly. It may mean a particular promotion accepts damaged devices, but it does not necessarily waive model, plan, line, account, or deadline requirements. Confirm that the offer accepts the phone’s specific defect rather than inferring eligibility from an advertisement.

2. Find out how the discount is paid
Identify whether the advertised value is an instant discount, one-time account credit, gift card, or recurring bill credit. For recurring credits, record the amount, number of months, when they are expected to start, and what happens if eligibility ends before the term is complete.
Timing varies. Verizon says credits may take one or two billing periods to appear after requirements are met. AT&T says its trade-in bill credits may take two to three billing cycles. A delay in the first credit is not necessarily a denial, but check the account and contact the carrier if credits do not arrive within the stated window. Calculate what you will spend across the whole credit period, not just the advertised phone payment. Include the device’s full financed amount, down payment, taxes and fees, any financing charges, and the added cost of a qualifying plan compared with the plan you would choose anyway. AT&T’s offers page, for example, shows selected promotions using 36-month installment and credit terms; that duration applies to those displayed offers, not every carrier deal, and offers can change. 3. Check what could stop or reverse credits
Before accepting the deal, find the written answer for each change you might make during the credit term:

- Canceling the promoted line or moving its number to another account.
- Switching to a lower-cost or otherwise ineligible plan.
- Paying off the new device early.
- Upgrading to another phone before the credits finish.
Verizon lists these types of changes among circumstances that can stop or reverse credits, and says the device must remain on a qualifying plan for the entire promotion term. If the phone you plan to trade in still has an installment balance, verify whether it qualifies and whether that balance must be paid separately. 4. Verify the old phone’s exact model and condition
Use the carrier’s official trade-in checker. Enter the correct manufacturer, model, storage or configuration, and IMEI if requested. Answer condition questions accurately, including whether the phone powers on, whether the screen is damaged, and whether the battery or activation lock presents an issue. Keep a record of the answers and quoted value.
Do not guess based on the phone’s appearance or a broad advertisement. Verizon says it validates the make, model, storage, and condition after receiving the device and expects it to match the submitted description. T-Mobile says it may inspect a device and revalue it if the model or condition differs from what was submitted, or if a return deadline is missed. 5. Protect your data and remove activation locks
- Back up or transfer your data. Verify that photos, messages, contacts, and other needed files are accessible from the new phone or backup before erasing the old one.
- Complete required account and transfer steps. Follow the carrier and device-maker instructions for signing out and transferring service or authentication methods.
- Turn off activation locks. Disable Find My or other device-account locks, and turn off Google activation lock or factory-reset protection where applicable. AT&T specifically advises disabling activation locks before mailing a trade-in.
- Remove physical media. Take out the SIM card and any memory card you intend to keep.
- Factory-reset the phone. Do this only after the backup and any transfers are confirmed. AT&T’s guidance says to back up data and factory reset the old device. AT&T Phone Trade-In Deals

6. Confirm the return deadline and shipping rules
Check exactly when the return window starts, whether you can hand in the phone at a store, and which label, kit, or packaging is required. The dates below apply to the named carriers’ stated processes, not to carrier promotions generally.

Before packing, photograph the phone’s condition and identifying details. Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number, then follow the trade-in status until the carrier confirms its valuation and the expected credits. These records can help you resolve a disagreement about what was sent or when it arrived.
7. Compare the full commitment, not just the phone price
