Before choosing a Cardano wallet, decide who should control the keys, how you will protect recovery access, and whether you need convenience, local blockchain verification, or offline key storage. Wallets differ in custody, device support, and features; none removes the need to protect your credentials and verify what you approve.
What a Cardano wallet does
ADA is recorded on the Cardano blockchain; a wallet manages the keys used to access and sign transactions involving those assets. The ADA is not stored inside a wallet app or hardware device. Cardano explains the relationship between wallets and keys in its Keys & Wallets guide.
Decide who controls the keys
Non-custodial wallet
You control the keys and are responsible for recovery. If you lose access to the device and the recovery phrase, you may lose access to the assets. Cardano Docs puts it plainly: “Losing your private keys means losing access to your digital assets.” See Types of wallets.
Custodial exchange account
The service controls the private keys on your behalf. That can make access convenient, but it means you rely on the provider to manage custody and access. Cardano discourages leaving assets on exchanges longer than necessary; see What Is ada, the Native Token of Cardano.

Protect the recovery phrase
For a non-custodial wallet, the recovery phrase is a master credential: anyone who has it may be able to restore the wallet and take its funds. Cardano warns, “Anyone with these words can restore your wallet on any device and take your funds.”
- Write the phrase down and store it offline in a secure place.
- Never enter it into a website or support chat, or save it in a photo or cloud note.
- Do not share it. A legitimate support team should not need your recovery phrase.
These precautions apply even when you use a hardware wallet: the device does not replace the recovery phrase or remove the need to check transactions before signing. Cardano’s wallet and security explainer describes key and recovery responsibilities.

Choose between hot, full-node, and hardware options
| Option | Main benefit | Trade-off | Often suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hot or light wallet | Quick to install and convenient on mobile or in a browser; commonly used for everyday activity. | Internet-connected and uses a remote service for blockchain data. | Frequent transactions, dApps, or convenience-focused use. |
| Full-node desktop wallet | Downloads and validates blockchain data locally, reducing reliance on a remote provider for that verification. | Needs more time, disk space, and desktop resources. | People who value local verification and can support the resource requirements. |
| Hardware wallet | Keeps signing keys on a separate device, isolated from an internet-connected computer during normal use. | Requires care of an additional device; loss or damage matters, and compatibility varies. | People who prioritize offline key protection, particularly for less frequently accessed holdings. |
| Custodial exchange account | Convenient access through a service. | A third party controls the private keys. | People who knowingly prefer provider-managed custody. |
Hot wallet or cold storage?
A hot wallet is connected and convenient for funds used often. Cold storage keeps keys offline and is generally aimed at less frequent access. Cardano suggests keeping smaller amounts used regularly in a hot wallet and using cold or hardware storage for larger, rarely accessed savings. This is general guidance, not personalized financial advice. See Cardano’s wallet types guide.
Light wallet or full node?
Light wallets install quickly and use a remote service for chain data. A full-node wallet downloads and verifies the blockchain locally, which takes longer and uses more storage. Cardano describes Daedalus as its full-node desktop wallet; check current system and installation requirements in official documentation before choosing it. When hardware storage makes sense
A hardware wallet is an optional device for keeping signing keys apart from an internet-connected computer. Cardano documentation names Ledger Nano S Plus, Ledger Nano X, and Trezor Model T as devices to consider; its wallet explainer also identifies Ledger, Trezor, and Keystone as supported hardware-wallet examples. These examples do not establish that every device works with every wallet. Confirm the exact model, wallet, and connection method on their current official pages before buying or setting up.

Cardano suggests checking whether wallet software is open source, whether it supports hardware wallets, and how long it has been available. Treat these as useful signals, not proof that a wallet is safe. Check the official site and documentation for current maintenance and compatibility information, and avoid choosing solely because a wallet appears in a directory or has a familiar name.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose custody: decide whether you accept a provider controlling keys or want to take on non-custodial recovery responsibility.
- Plan recovery: if self-custody is your choice, decide how you will write down and securely store the phrase offline before funding the wallet.
- Match access to use: choose a convenient hot wallet for frequent use, or assess offline storage for holdings you expect to access less often.
- Choose verification needs: decide whether a light wallet’s remote chain-data service is acceptable or whether you want the local validation and resource demands of a full node.
- Check exact compatibility: confirm your device, hardware wallet, staking or delegation, governance, dApp, and asset needs against current official wallet information.
- Review trust signals: consider open-source status, hardware support, and track record as evidence to weigh—not guarantees.
