Before opening or switching a bank account in India, compare how easily it links to UPI, what the account costs, which limits apply, how payment problems are handled, and what happens if someone makes an unauthorised transaction. Check each bank’s current account terms and UPI guidance: fees, limits, and app features can change.

What should I check before choosing a new bank for UPI and everyday payments?

Compare at least two banks using the same checklist. A low or zero minimum balance does not by itself guarantee the account has every service you need, and UPI’s network-wide ceilings do not guarantee that a particular bank or app will allow a transaction up to those amounts.

What to compare What to verify
UPI setup Supported account types, registered mobile number, linking steps, and support for your usual payments.
Account cost Minimum or average balance, charges for falling below it, and optional debit-card or service fees.
Limits and availability Per-transaction and daily limits, transaction-count caps, and any restrictions after registration or PIN reset.
Support and recovery How to report pending, failed, or wrongly credited payments and how to reach the bank.
Security and recourse How to block access, report unauthorised activity, and escalate an unresolved complaint.

Will the account link reliably to UPI?

UPI setup depends on the bank account being discoverable through a compatible app and on the mobile number verified in that app matching the number registered with the bank. NPCI warns that a mismatch can prevent the account from being fetched. Check the bank’s setup instructions and confirm that your account type is supported before switching your primary number or closing an existing account. See the NPCI UPI FAQ.

Also check how the app handles multiple linked accounts and whether switching between them is straightforward. NPCI’s BHIM product information describes switching among linked accounts; features may change, so check the current app details rather than assuming every bank’s app works the same way.

What are the balance rules and charges?

Read the bank’s current schedule of charges and account terms, not just the product name or opening-page headline. Compare the minimum or average balance requirement, charges if you fall below it, debit-card fees, and any costs for services you expect to use. RBI guidance requires transparent disclosure of minimum-balance requirements and related charges; its customer-service notification is a useful reference.

A Basic Savings Bank Deposit Account (BSBDA) has no minimum-balance requirement, but it comes with a defined minimum service package. A bank may set transparent terms or pricing for services beyond that package. Do not assume every basic or “zero balance” account includes the same extra features. See the RBI’s BSBDA FAQ.

Which UPI limits will actually apply?

NPCI lists a normal UPI ceiling of up to ₹1 lakh per transaction. It lists ceilings up to ₹2 lakh for specified special categories and up to ₹5 lakh for IPO and Retail Direct Scheme transactions. These are network-level ceilings, not a promise that every bank, app, account, or payment will permit the maximum. Check the limits for the particular transaction type with the bank and app you plan to use. NPCI’s UPI FAQ describes the categories.

Ask the bank about daily amount and transaction-count restrictions, and about any temporary restrictions after registering UPI or resetting a PIN. These rules can be bank- or app-specific. For example, SBI’s UPI guidance publishes its own limits and cooling-period information; those rules are an example for SBI, not a universal standard.

How will you get help with a pending or failed payment?

Before choosing, locate the in-app dispute option and the bank’s customer-care channels. Check what instructions the bank gives for pending, failed, or wrongly credited payments, and whether branch support matters for your situation. NPCI says UPI customers can raise grievances through participating bank apps. UPI is described by NPCI as operating 24/7, regardless of bank working hours, but that does not guarantee a particular app will always be available or every payment will succeed.

For covered failed transactions, RBI has specified turnaround times and compensation rules. The applicable period depends on the transaction type; consult the RBI notification on failed-transaction turnaround and compensation and follow the bank or app’s stated dispute process.

What should you check about unauthorised transactions?

Find out how to report an unauthorised transaction quickly and block or secure access to the account. NPCI’s instruction is direct: “Please do not share your UPI-PIN with anyone.” RBI directions require banks to take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions after a customer reports one. Review the bank’s reporting channels and its instructions for protecting the account; see the RBI customer-protection directions.

Where can you escalate an unresolved complaint?

Start with the payment app’s grievance route or the bank’s complaint process; RBI escalation is a separate step. If the bank does not resolve a complaint, check the RBI’s current eligibility and filing process before escalating. The RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026 FAQ, updated July 1, 2026, says the 2026 scheme took effect on that date and replaced the 2021 scheme for new matters. Use the current FAQ rather than relying on older scheme descriptions.
