XRP is a digital asset native to the XRP Ledger; buying it is not buying shares in Ripple. If you later transfer XRP, verify the network, destination address, and whether the recipient requires a destination tag.
Know what you are buying
XRP is the digital asset native to the XRP Ledger. Ripple is a technology company, not the asset itself; buying XRP does not give you ownership of Ripple. Ripple describes XRP as an open-source digital asset and says it does not endorse or recommend exchanges. See Ripple’s FAQ for the company’s own explanation.
Availability and rules depend on where you live and on the platform. Confirm that buying, holding, and withdrawing XRP are all supported in your jurisdiction; an asset appearing in an app does not necessarily mean withdrawals are enabled.
Calculate the full cost before funding an account
A quoted trading fee is only one possible cost. Check the platform’s current execution price or spread, trading fee, payment-method charge, deposit and withdrawal terms, and any account fees. If you plan to move XRP to a separate wallet, include the platform’s withdrawal charge as well as the network transaction cost.

- Purchase price and spread: Compare the quoted price with the price you expect to receive; the difference can affect your total even when a separate trading fee looks low.
- Funding and account charges: Check the fee for your payment method and any applicable account charges.
- Withdrawal costs: Find out whether the platform charges to withdraw XRP and whether it imposes minimums or limits.
- Custody charges: For a separate custody provider, ask about transaction, transfer, annual, setup, and closure fees. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance recommends checking these categories in its December 12, 2025 staff bulletin. The bulletin is staff guidance, not a Commission rule or regulation.
Costs vary by provider, payment method, location, and time, so use the current fee schedule and quote for your own account rather than relying on a general estimate.
Choose who controls the keys
Custody is about control: a custodian holds the private keys, while in self-custody you hold and protect them yourself. This is separate from wallet format. A software wallet and a hardware wallet can both be self-custodial; a device being physical does not, by itself, determine who controls its keys.

These choices can be combined: for example, an exchange account for trading and a separate self-custody wallet for assets you want to control directly. Neither approach is universally safest; custody shifts risk between dependence on a provider and responsibility for your own keys. Understand recovery before using self-custody
A wallet manages keys that authorize transactions; it does not hold XRP like a physical wallet holds cash. A recovery phrase may restore access if a device or software is lost, but someone who obtains the phrase may be able to control the assets. Keep it private and secure, and never share it with someone claiming to be support.

If you lose non-custodial keys or recovery information, there may be no recovery route. Before transferring funds, make sure you know how the wallet’s recovery process works and can protect the backup independently of the device.
A hardware wallet is optional, not a guarantee against loss or fraud. It cannot protect you if you reveal the recovery phrase or approve a malicious transaction. Ripple’s wallet information lists Ledger and Trezor in its XRP Ledger wallet category, but check current support for the exact model rather than assuming every device from a brand works with XRP Ledger. Separate XRPL reserves from fees
As documented for XRPL Mainnet at the time of writing, the base reserve is 1 XRP per account, with an additional 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each owned ledger object. These amounts are reserved against account and object requirements; they are not fees paid to an exchange. Validators can change reserve settings, and values may differ on other networks. Check the current XRP Ledger reserve documentation before relying on a figure.
The XRP Ledger documentation lists 10 drops (0.00001 XRP) as the standard minimum reference transaction cost. A transaction’s required cost can rise with network load; the XRP used for the transaction cost is destroyed rather than paid to a validator or service provider. This network cost is separate from any exchange withdrawal fee. Check the current network or wallet estimate before sending, particularly when activity is elevated. See XRP Ledger transaction cost.

Check transfer details before sending
- Confirm the network. Make sure the receiving service expects XRP on the XRP Ledger, not an asset or token on another network.
- Copy the destination address from the recipient. Verify it in the receiving wallet or exchange’s current deposit instructions.
- Check for a destination tag. Some exchange-hosted XRP deposit addresses use a tag to route funds to the right customer. Ask the recipient whether one is required and enter the exact value it provides.
- Consider a small test transfer. If fees and minimums make it practical, send a small amount first, then confirm it arrived and was credited before transferring more. A test reduces some operational risk but cannot guarantee against loss.
If a tag is missing or incorrect, contact the receiving provider; it may be able to help locate or credit the funds, but recovery is not assured. Ripple says it cannot reverse transactions on the ledger. Its FAQ also cautions users to check transfer details.
